Hi all! I'm new here and this is my first post. I have a used 2007 Prius (my dad owns it) that I've been driving for a little over two and a half years. I can't remember exactly when it started, but my car has this issue where, if I make a turn from a stop, it cuts out a few times. Like, if I'm sitting at an intersection waiting for the light or traffic to clear and step on the gas to turn, it'll go but lurch about 3 or 4 times in the process. It scares the heck out of me because I never know if I'm going have enough speed to make the turn without causing an accident, so I wind up waiting for completely clear lanes, which annoys the drivers behind me. It happens randomly, so if I try to show someone else the problem, there's no guarantee it'll happen every time. It's more frequent when turning right. I've told my dad about all this, but when he took it for service months ago, he said they said that it was normal (sounds fishy to me). So here I am now, the problem's still there, so I tell him and he decides to get new tires for the car. Those came, but they didn't fix it. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, do you know what causes it? I'm hoping to find enough information to convince my dad to really get it looked at.

Sounds like the traction control kicking in. Are you trying to accelerate quickly and/or on loose surfaces when this happens?

Were the old tires really worn? Are the new tires cheap? How many miles on the new ones? It can take a couple thousand miles for them to break in.

The old tires were worn a bit, not horribly. But the new tires came all the way from Georgia (not sure why), so my guess is they weren't cheap. My dad had them put on a week and a half ago, and I don't drive very far, so not many miles on them at all.

The problem does happen when I accelerate quickly (usually at a high speed limit intersection) and sometimes the traction light comes on. It's happened twice so far with the new tires.

There's been a few posts about the traction control system kicking in while executing high speed u turns. So a sharp turn made while accelerating will probably do the same.

Accelerate more moderately, and less sharply, if possible. Or avoid making right turns. ;)

Check the tire pressure. Find the max sidewall pressure stamped on the tire. Increase the air pressure in the tires in steps up to max sidewall to see if the handling improves.
