I've gotten a lot of help over the years from this site. I haven't seen this fix posted yet, and I hope it helps others avoid the high cost of a refurbished MFD. The attached pdf has the same text as below but with pictures added. -- David

My MFD resistive overlay was cracked and not working well. I disassembled the unit to find the part number of the MFD LCD screen. It’s a Toshiba LTA070B052F (2008 Canadian Prius, no NAV). These screens are available on AliExpress for about $140.00.

I took a chance and ordered only the resistive overlay… a “no glare 7 inch 4 pin glass touch screen panel digitizer lens for LTA070B052F”. It cost me about $22.00.

I’m going to try to add a few pictures or a pdf of how I replaced the resistive overlay. There are already great descriptions of dash and MFD disassembly so I’ll skip right to the LCD screen.

I started in the top corner with a razor blade and cut along the long axis of the glass. The digitizer sits on top of a black plastic molding. It’s attached with 2 thin strips of double-sided tape only along the long axis of the glass.

    DSC02889.jpg
After removing the old panel I carefully cut off the old tape with the razor.

The bottom of the new panel was protected by a peel-off plastic layer. Under this layer of plastic I found double-sided tape on all 4 sides. I peeled off the white backing from the tape and stuck the panel in place.

It sits flush on the sides and about 1mm from the bottom of the black plastic molding. Its about 1.5mm from the top of the black plastic molding - right where the original fit.

After removing the upper layer of protective plastic, I reassembled the MFD. The metal MFD case allows adjustments of the distance between screen and the dash mount.

It works well. It’s responsive and accurate. It has the same dull surface as the original. The only difference is that it seems to be a little darker or has a coloured hue different from the original.

Just to keep everything in the same place:

The best description I've seen for taking apart the dash is a youtube video from LusciousGarage. Look for video 8lXtbyJw9_c

And there's Hobbit's MFD disassembly page on techno-fandom with instructions on working in the MFD.

that's an impressive repair. I hope I never need to do it, but if I do, thanks in advance.

Sure. The whole LCD display for my MFD is this one on aliexpress:

Seller: Z&C Electronic Technology Co., Ltd
Product ID: 1330787794
“LTA070B052F Original A+ Grade 7 inch TFT LCD Display with touch screen digitizer for 2004-2006 Toyota”

And the resistive overlay I used to repair my screen is from aliexpress:

Seller: Car life, Store #319983 Product ID: 32310043359
“1 pc no glare 7 inch 4 pin Black glass touch Screen panel Digitizer Lens panel for LTA070B052F LCD”

Now that I've used it for a few days I can say for sure that its darker than the original. It's pretty obvious when driving in the sun. I'm still pretty happy for the price, though.

    Cheers

Thanks for showing this, my display has the same cracked issue, I've tried two replacment screens from China of which both never worked, and then a second hand unit that never worked from the start (it came wrapped in used Pizza boxes which didn't help) so now I know I can replace just the touch panel I will certainly give that a go.

I did this same repair for a friend's 2006 over the weekend. Boy, getting the MFD apart and back together again can be a trick and I repair all kinds of electronics (mostly medical and biological research equipment) for a living. Don't embark on that project when you are tired.

The reason I am posting about this now is that it seems that when you buy the glass for this repair off of some of the Ebay vendors it may NOT come with double sided mounting tape installed. If you know that in advance it is not that big a deal since that sort of tape is readily available. But, I did this repair on a friend's kitchen table on an anti-static mat and not in my shop. So I had to improvise as taking the parts of the MFD back to the shop was not an option due to time and distance constraints.

The improvisation was to use double sided photo mounting tape. It worked but took a lot of care and I am skeptical about how long it will last. I may be back in to that car in a few months or a year. My friend knows this and is still thrilled to be able to use so many features of his car again after many months without the touch screen.

Next time I do this I will have some of the 3M tape 300LSE 2mm wide on hand. You can find it on Ebay and Ifixit.com etc for modest prices in small quantities. Or if you get in a pinch like I did and it is not 9pm on a Sunday night, you can check with a local cell phone repair shop for some of the tape. They will almost certainly have it.

So if you buy glass for this sort of repair make sure to ask the vendor if the tape comes on the glass or not.

I also noticed that the connector cable was in not exactly the right location but it was long enough to reach the PCB with extra cable being carefully tucked in to a nook or cranny (can't remember which it was).
And just for completeness, here is the text from the Ebay listing. Oh and my purchase price was $23.69 including shipping.

OK I hope that helps some of you looking to do this repair. And as you disassemble your MFD, take lots of pictures particularly of how cables are routed. There are a at least a few versions of the MFD depending on which features you get and so when you loot at a tutorial or video online you can bet yours will be SIMILAR but not always exactly like those depicted.

Many thanks for posting this, even though my post was from 2015, I've had the replacement touch screen panel all this time and still haven't connected it back up! I might actually do it now, but will purchase fresh 3m tape, there is tape on there but it may have dried out.

I hope I inspire you to do the fix. When my friend drove off with a now working display (@2:30am) he was so "touch happy" playing with his screen again I was worried he would crash into something. LOL

Don't try this sort of repair for the first time when you are tired. It is a bit tedious. And take LOTS of pictures of the assembly with your smart phone or digital camera as you take the unit apart. The routing of the cables can be tricky.

I bought some more 2mm tape recently after this job. I have used that to repair some other equipment like protein amplifiers and plant growth chambers. I would not hesitate to use it on the Prius, 3mm should be fine too. Make sure that the temperature rating for the tape is high enough to withstand being in a hot car in the summer for extended periods of time.

Many thanks for the reply, I will attempt it whilst fully awake, just need to have a good nights sleep first!

I’ve taken the unit apart a few times now to try and fit whole replacement screens, which wasn’t working from the outset, but know how it all goes together so not a problem there. I’ve also found replacement tape on Amazon so will order that at some point.

I am in the process of doing this. Already replaced the digitizer and putting everything back together. Unfortunately, I did not take pics and the thinner of the two leads that go from the screen to the housing came off. I am including a pic of what the loose wire looks like.

Does anyone here know where it attaches to the housing?

Hope that's the one you were looking for. If not, let me know!

Looking at it again, the photo you show may be the other end of the wire I took a picture of. If that's the case, that end clips to the back of the Audio button circuit board.
