    Why would they?
With no need for an attendant, there is no need for a building. It lowers the costs substantially.
And a full SC station, even in CA, is a pretty rare sight.

he could move someone along when another car pulls in. you know, like public tennis courts. when someone is waiting, don't ignore them and play all day.

I wonder if the super chargers in the state of Oregon have to have operators, like they have to do in their gas stations.

Location is in Fountain Valley, in the Costco Shopping center. But it is clear on the other side of the parking lot. They do have 8 spaces, two on the side not in view to include in my picture. All 8 spaces were taken, and only that one man was in sight next to his car.

What happens when one parks there and decides to go shop and eat for several hours?

    Virtually nobody does that.
Generally people go grab a bit to eat or just stretch their legs.
I've used these about 50 times. Only once did I wait at the car, and the car was never their very long after charging.

Some owners use an App which allows someone else with the same App to text them to let them know someone needs the charger. I've never run into a full station, but if they were busier I suppose I would get that.

From the number of pictures I have seen of this station, it is a rare event to have all 8 stalls filled. I suspect it was an initial rush of people that wanted to check it out, or a opening event (our local group has done that) or testing.

There's a station in the little town my brother lives in that's in Va. He drives by it virtually every day and he said he's never seen a car by it yet.

I don't even want to count the L1 and L2, but worldwide there are over 9000 L3 (super charger (500, 225 US), chademo (8500, 1238 US), plus all the combo plugs (many chademo also provide combo plug in the US and Europe).

Alternative Fuels Data Center: Alternative Fueling Station Counts by State
European Union Hydrogen Highway | Hydrogen Cars Now
There are 12 hydrogen stations in the US in June. I think the estimates for the future are more important CARB thinks california will have 86 stations at the end of 2021, Japan thinks 35 stations by the summer 2020 olympics, Toyota anounced it wants 12 hydrogen stations for a north east hydrogen highway, from the 1 now in conneticut. Various dates given but in 2010 it was supposed to be here, by now and stations have closed. Europe planned for 143 sometime in the future in 2012.

If I add these up maybe we get 276 in planning , many of these can only fill 100 vehicles a week, some may be able to fill 300/day. This is not apples to apples Lets say each station can average 500 cars a week, those could service 138,000 cars. There are over 20,000 L3 plugs, but we only expect cars to fill 10% from L3, each plug could probably fill 100 cars a week, or 2 million cars a week with all those plugs, if 10% of cars hit L3 in a week, that is 20 million cars. Most of these are under utilized in Japan.

Nice you at the 500th tesla super charger.

Its immature network. If the places are full, you wait. If they are full a lot tesla will add more plugs to that super charger location. If you don't want to wait there are plenty of pay L3 evgo stations nearby. This is an area very built up with L3 chargers. You need to buy an adapter to use the evgo stations in a tesla, but you could have bought a phev instead.

    This Is from Tesla:

    Supercharger Charging Profile

Based on 85 kWh Model S

    40 minutes. 80%charged

    75 minutes. 100%charged

Charging from 10% to 80% is quick and typically provides ample range to travel between most Superchargers. Charging from 80% to 100% doubles the charge time because the car must reduce current to top off cells. Actual charge times may vary.

    Also is from Tesla

    Miles of range.
    After a half hour charge

10 miles. 30A Public Charging Station

14 miles. 40A High Voltage Outlet

    170 miles. Tesla Supercharger

And if you list the fuel cost for each, it becomes very appealing to Supercharge a Tesla.

I think the avearge cost of electricity in california is around $0.15/kwh that works out to about $5.06/gge. Toyota said they thought hydrogen was about $10/kg but would go down to $6/kg sometime in the future, gasoline is about $3.30 gallon in california. Prices are lower for all these things in other states ;-)

If we use 100/mpge for a plug-in, 67 miles/kg (epa mirai), and 50 for a prius we get

    $0.051 /electricicty
$0.149 mirai to someone other than the driver today (free for drivers)
$0.090 mirai if hydrogen drops to $6/kg
$0.066 prius gen III or c.

Given the choice people would rather pay 5 cents a mile to their utility than 6 cents to the gas station. If people have money they can pay their solar vendor instead of the utility with a plug in.

That is one thing those people forget when talking about the convenience of gas or hydrogen versus fueling while you sleep at home.

The other thing they found is people would rather wait and use a supercharger (no incremental cost to them, though they paid when they bought the car) than to get swapped in under 5 minutes and pay. In fact they don't really use chargers very often that they have to pay for. Supercharger - pre paid refueling for trips is one of the tesla innovations.

The other innovation people like is over the air software updates. I had to go to my dealer twice to get software revised in my car, and it was kind of a pain in the nice person. Wasted about 4 hours on those two trips, driving there, back, waiting for the one guy that knew how to program a prius, etc. Hopefully Toyota will be able to do over the air upgrades like tesla in the future.

Sadly, the 2nd gen rav4 EV, even with its Tesla guts still has to come in to Toyota for programming. There is an ongoing gen II software recall even as we speak. Too bad Toyota didn't opt to get that wonderful feature for their customers - which I'm sure was one of the features that impressed Consumer Reports

12 stations - and on a good day, maybe 65% are working properly (see Hyundai hydrogen disappointed lessees) - so here's to hoping the one drivers are heading for, actually is up & running. Might be a good feature for smart phone ap's ...

Here in South Jersey PSE&G's electricity is $0.18/kWh and gas is $2.029/gallon in Delran.

    Using your calculations, that's $0.0612/electricity & $0.04058 Prius Gen3.

Every time I pass the Menlo Park supercharger it has not been fully occupied. An employee at the mall must charge there as I've seen a Model S moved from a supercharger to a parking space on the deck.

There's a nurse at the hospital that uses THE charging station at the local shopping center as her personal charger. You'll find her LEAF plugging in for the entire 10 hour shift.

Actually these are THEIR highest rated car brands, based on phone calls to owners ...
    Benchmarks By Industry
This company's "Many Years Ago" base line however makes Tesla fall into the "NOT AVAILABLE" data line ... 7th from the bottom. Once they get enough data .... their publication may likely be modified ..... and then, might be relevant to the OP. The alternate conclusion would be that Tesla satisfaction rating falls off their chart ... below the likes of FIAT and Oldsmobile.

Great, if we want to talk about branding, that would be a great thread to start. Let me know where that is & i'll rave there about our Lexus hybrid AWD suv.

Which is great, I've always enjoyed Lexus, great cars.

But by this thread's subject, no single Lexus Model has ever scored as high as the Tesla Model S.
So if you want to buy a car dealership, buy a Lexus dealership.
If you want to us the highest rated car, buy the P85D.
