Three years ago my compressor started going. I let it die a slow and miserable death because of the cost involved with replacing it. Finally I decided to fix it once I found a mechanic that I trusted enough to do the work without ripping me off. I went with Japanese Carmasters in the Miramar Rd. area of San Diego since I was doing h is IT work I figured he'd behave himself. After the replacement of the "bag" and compressor (they were the only two parts of the kit listed below that were required to fix the A/C. If any of the other parts that came with the kit were to be replaced it would have added $500 to the labor and they were not needed at all.

So for $300 labor and $486 in parts I got my A/C replaced. Bought the replacement unit at DiscountACParts. The warranty was one year and they sales person said they had never seen a return on this item. He seemed honest but you never really know. For those of you

Included in the kit. * were the items we actually installed
2005 Toyota Prius All Models AC Oil O-Ring or Solvent
    AC Kit #60-81536 Discount
*2005 Toyota Prius All Models A/C Compressor
    425.00
*2005 Toyota Prius All Models A/C Expansion Device
12 Month Parts Warranty, Unlimited Mileage
    SALES TAX
    36.00
    TOTAL due
    486.00

Plus $300 labor. $786 total to replace the A/C compressor and an expansion bag on a 05 Prius.

My A/C went out suddenly. The dealer said there was metal in the line, so they replaced both the compressor and the condenser, of course they are hybrid-only parts, so the total bill was something like $2K as I recall. That was a bit more than a year ago, on my 2006.
