JBL to Aftermarket

    Good Morning to everyone, I have been reading the forums for the past few weeks and recently purchased a used 2005 Prius with the JBL 9 speaker sound system. I was looking for a few feature this unit did not have (mainly bluetooth audio) and wanted a touchscreen so I purchased an AVH-270BT for the car. I am a bit fuzzy on a few things and maybe just haven't found the right information.

    I have been reading about the upgrade and I am trying to understand the setup (without having pulled the dash apart yet) so that when I get in there I am fully prepared. I have installed your typical radio with 4 speakers several times before and you simply match the wiring harness of the radio with the wiring adapter harness for the vehicle, plug it in and your good to go. This does not sound like that at all.

    If I understand correctly all 9 speakers are wired to a JBL amp under the passenger seat. So instead of wiring up each speaker I simply plug up the Metra TYTO adapter to the preamp out on the stereo to the input harness for the JBL amp?

    Even if I have that much right (and I am certainly not sure) it sounds like I need another resister for something else. I just want to make sure I am not going to throw codes or anything once I am done. Steering wheel controls are not at all important.

    Lastly, I wanted to know if it makes sense to keep the current amp or save the $55 for the Metra harness and swap for a better amplifier.

    the jbl amp incorporates some of the functions that would be in a normal head unit. so if you wanted to change the amp you'd have to rewire the whole mess. I would checkout crutchfield.com to see what all you need to replace just the head unit. they can probably sell you exactly what you'll need and will include instructions with it. and they got a help line if you do have any problems getting it to work.

    69shovlhed Thanks for your response! I have the following in my Amazon cart:

    Metra 70-1761
    Metra TYTO-01
    Scosche Dash kit for Prius

    And I have a 68ohm .5 watt resistor for the A/C functions.

    Does all this sound right?

    I'm not sure. I haven't put an aftermarket head unit in my '06 w/ JBL yet because no one makes an adapter to use the factory blue tooth mic. the base model needed a harness adapter which had the 68 ohm resister built into it. I used a metra axxess unit for the steering wheel buttons, and that was all I needed. the adapter harness was also by scosche; you need it so you won't have to ruin your factory harness.
    the reasons I like crutchfield are: fast shipping, advisors that can tell you exactly what you need for your car, and they send detailed instructions for the install. I've never needed the help line, but its there if you need it.
