I’ve noticed that when I close my C4 passenger front door it makes a chinsey hollow twanging noise. However my driver front door makes a nice high quality and solid thunk.

Have you guys noticed that? Maybe a layer of FatMat on the inside surface of the door will take care of it?

Yeah the doors do sound more like a tin can then anything else. A few pieces of any type of dampner will help the door sound "heavier"

i glued some home weatherstripping to the door where it meets the rubber gasket, makes all the difference in the world. especially when closing while other doors are open. the last door to close seems to be the thunkiest.:)

This isn't the first time this concern with Prius doors has been brought to...uh... light.

Speaking ONLY for me, I don't really care what my door closing sounds like. My priority is solely based on the doors ability to close properly. If it sounds like a light door being closed, it's probably because to be as fuel efficient as possible it was made to be a light door.

Is this just a matter of what we are trained from a auditory aspect to "expect"?

Making a light door sound heavier, or actually be heavier, just so it "sounds" better when I close it?

I suppose we are all free to make modifications that please us personally...but when I close my Prius door, I hear the sound of fuel efficiency.

Now if you could provide me with a sound chip that made so that every time I closed my door it sounded like a draw bridge being lowered? I might be in for that.

Getting ready to order FatMat for this project.
Do I need any tools to remove the door panels?

One of these is always handy:

And a rigid putty knife or two. Wrap all blades with masking tape to protect paint.

It seems odd that one door sounds good, the other not. Maybe the panelling on the passenger side isn't pushed in properly??

    That's is possible.
All of the other doors sound find but for the front passenger door.
I can tap it with my fist and it goes "sprooiiing".
The other doors do not do this.
Are the door panel connectors reusable or do I need to get those too?

The sound was coming from a series of broken adhesive connections between the sheet metal of the exterior door panel and the structural support frame of the door. Yes, that is all that connects the sheet metal to the door frame members.
    See the pictures.
If I had known it was a problem like this while my warranty was still in effect I would have had the dealer fix it.
However, with the use of sound insulation tape and RTV I was able to tighten the broken connections so that the the door now shuts with a very solid sounding "CLUNK".
While I was at it, I used a bit of tape between the stampeded sheet metal support above the structural tube. You can see a bit of it in the last photo.
