Turn off the damn backup beep

    Can you electorate a bit more on the process for us newbees to try?

    XT1060 ?

    These instructions worked flawlessly for my 2010 Toyota Prius. I just copied and pasted the commands in the little white box in the bottom left of the terminal app.

    Now to other commands that carista charges so much money for . . . . . . wink! wink!!!

    yes, it does..if you like silence remove your stereo too, most of the crap blasting from cars these days is more annoying then beeping for the 5 seconds the car is in reverse

    I don't have my stereo on when backing up. The beep distracts me more than anything. It's flat out annoying. I paid for the car, it's not a government requirement, so I'm turning the dang beep off!

    I'm sure the beeping would be louder than the real even if you had the radio on whilst backing up

    So.... I just tried to do this with my scanguage... but unfortunately, as I removed it from my previous vehicle, I cracked the display and now it's worthless... So, I called my preferred dealership here in the Twin Cities, and they wanted $75 to do it. So I called my least preferred dealer (closer) to see what they would charge... NOTHING!!! Plus, an oil change is only $49.95! DEAL!

    So, anyone in the Twin Cities that wants to have their reverse beep reduced to 1 beep, get in touch with Walser Toyota in Bloomington (I just always thought their vehicle prices were too high, even though they seem like nice folks... but the service department seems quite fair!) This is such good news for me, seeing as though this is the closest dealer to my home. Have an appointment for 4pm today! Can't wait!

    @minnyprius, try contacting linear logic about your cracked display on your scangauge. They might be willing to replace it, or send you a part. You've got nothing to lose by sending them an email.

    Gary, I had different responses to my commands, so I stopped before I did any damage:

    AT SH 7c0 (hit 'Send')
    Returns: AT SH 7c0 ? (not: OK. The ? suggests it didn't understand me)

    21ac (hit 'Send')
    Returns: 21 AC 7f 21 12 (not: 61 AC 00)

    At this point I quit, deciding that if I patched the wrong place it might cause problems.
    What should I do now?

    BTW this is with a 2012 Plug-In Advanced Prius.

    The Elm is not behaving as expected. I'd get the full pdf instruction manual from the Elm folks, read it for several hours, and try to reset it to initial state. Or just return the one you've got and get another from some other vendor. The real Elm chip (from the people who designed it) costs about $30 by itself. So a real Elm device must cost at least $75. The $10 copies don't always behave the way the real one does.

    Seems a lot of angst, time/dollar expense and potential damage, to disable an innocuous safety feature. It beeps for 5~10 seconds, backing outa garage or into parking spot.

    So I read the ELM327 manual here

    And based on that, tried the following tests. My comments are in parentheses:

    > ATZ (reset all)
    ELM327 v1.5 (the version number of my ELM327 chip)
    > ATDP (display protocol)
    AUTO,ISO 15765-4 (CAN 11/500)
    > ATRV (read voltage)
    11.8V
    > AT SH 7C0 (set header to 00 07 C0)
    ? (OK, so my ELM didn't support the the Set Header command.)

    The ELM semed to do the first few commands OK (reset, display protocol, read voltage) but then not the Set Header.
    Here is the ELM I am using. GaryP said it would work with his instructions.


    And here is the Android terminal progam I am using with it.

    Based on this additional information, do you still think my ELM is defective? Or does it just fail to support Set Header?

    By the way, I tried sending the whole command without the "Set Header" first:

    The response doesn't match the expected (current setting of the reverse beep). Do you know what it does mean?

    The CAN protocol used in setting the Gen3 beep parameters is described in ScanGaugeII work on 2010? | Page 2 | PriusChat , starting at post #29. That thread from 6 years ago was mostly about using a Scangauge, but there's a lot of relevant data for using any communications device, be it Scangauge, Elm, Mini-Vci, or whatever. Note that 21 is a query request (61 in reply), 3b is a set request, and 7f is a null message that should be followed by another message with the actual data. It is safe to issue commands that start with 21, as they are queries. Commands that start with 3b set things, so they could mess something up if incorrect.

    The Elm device is a serial character device. The original implementations all used a serial connection at 9600 (or maybe 38.4?) rate. Most modern ones have a USB, Bluetooth, or WiFI front end, but it is till a character at a time interface at the actual Elm device.

    You might try "at sh 7c0" instead of "AT SH 7C0". Doubt it, but maybe it's case sensitive.

    I had the dealer "disable" (reduce to 1 beep) mine at the time of purchase, which negated the angst, time/dollar expense and potential damage... I imagine you could probably talk most dealers into doing it for no or minimal expense if you are already in their shop for some other service. It only takes them a minute or so to do it. If you're a die-hard DIY'er, well by all means do it yourself, and you should already used to dealing with the consequences your own mistakes.

    As for the innocuous safety feature, I imagine that most people don't spend a lot of time in reverse.. However, I'm one of those people who backs down his driveway, and sometimes I end up waiting for traffic... That gets really old after the first 30 seconds or so...

    A single beep when you shift into reverse is sufficient to perform the safety function of informing the driver they shifted into reverse, and I don't mind it at all. Each beep after that really serves no purpose, unless you're expecting the driver to somehow forget they are in reverse, or not shift into drive correctly and have the beep remind them to shift again...

    at that point one could argue you need a in-cabin sound to remind the driver they are in drive too, which is rather stupid.

    Bought one of those cheap bluetooth adapters from eBay for <$5 - Mini ELM327 OBD2 OBDII V2.1 Bluetooth.

    21ac returned 61 AC 94 72 instead of 61 AC 00.
    3bac40 returned NO DATA after a brief pause when it said SEARCHING.
    21ac continues to return 61 AC 94 72

    But the beep on reverse is gone.

    This was on a 2015 Prius 2.

    I bought the Carista adapter ($40) and in-app purchase ($20). Reverse beep changed to single beep. Super easy!

    I asked my dealer to do it, when I took my car in for other services, and they changed the beep to "single" at no charge.

    I took my new '14 v in for it's 5k service back in May '15....selling dealer changed reverse to one beep. No arm wresting, no charge.
