East Coasters will pay attention to this. Track is not particularly well defined yet. Look for information at all the typical places.

As often this may have larger effects in terms of water than wind. Too early to talk about Sandy II though, as it has a chance of basically sliding on by.

Rest of the world's oceans have been anything but quiet lately, which I realize is not a big deal for PC folks.

It is for me but I'm waiting for 2016 to continue mapping sea level change. I left off with early 2014 data.

FYI, the flood of moist air coming in over the Gulf of Mexico led to flooding in Mobil.

Details for landfall won't be more certain until it finally starts north later today, but the current "cone" track from NOAA already makes it certain that even the outlying effects will be felt by most of the east coast. Two of the best sources of info, below. Justin used to be a TV weatherman for the Baltimore area and now does freelance work, but he is by far the most accurate of anyone with his forecasts for snow storms (and weather in general). Don't let his grammar and spelling mistakes throw you.

We have state of emergency already due a to Nor'easter coming ashore now til Saturday in Va/Md/NJ. Many activities cancelled for the weekend. If we additionally get Joachin it could be a bad 1-2 punch.

Darn that Oktoberfest beer was already tasting good...supposed to be there tonite but it's a rain out.

Forecasts now agree on recurving, which means offshore east coast and lots of rainfall at sea. The biggest story will probably be the duration of high wind and rain in the Bahamas. Such loitering is unusual.

You would not necessarily want to spend next week in Bermuda, though.

Sad on the modern day Edmund Fitzgerald incident...hopefully better ending.

We dodged Bullet No.2 here but Bullet No.1 (N'oreaster) is here. I ordered a small 400W inverter just to be ready for the next time.

In 1972 on Okinawa, they announce typhoon condition red, which means leave your duty station and head to your barracks. In reality, one group stops by the package store on the way and a smaller group heads for the gate because when in condition black, the base is closed.

I was sharing a crib in the ville and got out in time. Power went out so no AC but I could sleep and find restaurants open. A day or so later, I went back to the barracks.

My first thought was someone opened the doors and invited the typhoon in. They had converted the water-pump fire extinguishers into 'purple passion' dispensers.

Purple because of the jug wine, which diluted the other ingredients. You see the MPs did not go out when the winds pickup ordinary debrie and make them leathal objects.

A lucky break for the east coast, not so much for that ship's crew, Bahamas or Bermuda. But it could have been far worse.

Don't give up on the crew just yet...at least not all of them.

She was a US flagged vessel.
That means that they're supposed to meet norms for survival gear.
I'm a little stymied at how all 33 souls physically went down with the ship without any EPIRB/ELT/PLB squirps.

Heck...even a Gumby suit will keep you alive in waters that warm until the Coasties get there!!!
Something about this isn't making sense to me....

    We'll know eventually.....

...why would the ship head directly into the Hurricane?
I heard a report of a phone call from a ship crew member before the incident, she said they were planning to head straight into the Hurricane
