Bad news that VW will cancel or postpone ""Anything that is not absolutely necessary will be cancelled or postponed. And it is why we will be intesifying the efficiency program. To be perfectly frank: this will not be a painless process."

Just imagine the unbelievable reveals not happening, Jetta, Beetle, Golf, etc... I've heard they've been working on new taillights for the golf the past few years. Might not get to see them now;)

VW needs to not only meet standards, they need to surpass them.
I could see their roll out of plugin vehicles get a higher priority that it did before.

It was an incredible achievement that Prius exceeded the upcoming Euro6 emission standard, 11 years earlier -- perhaps earlier with Gen1 back in 2001.

The media is hoping this is just VW. They're not quite so sure how to tactfully write articles lambasting all diesels from Europe. Not to mention the never-mentioned topic of Euro standards, mileage estimates, and all that stuff.

when you look at how specific the denials are by other companies, it leaves a lot of leeway for cheating.

to me, it's like drugs. consumer demand is driving the diesel drug lords. both parties see government pollution standards as interfering with their fix.

Looks like Toyota is coming out with Diesels soon:

PARIS — Toyota Motor Corp. is introducing its own version of a 2L-diesel engine with common-rail injection in high-end models of the Avensis sedan, built in Burnaston, U.K. The automaker is not giving a volume projection for the Avensis SR D4-D, but in general, 27% of Europe's new cars now are powered by diesels. Toyota, which built 155,000 Avensis models in 1998, is preparing a family of modern diesel engines, including a 1.4L for small cars, a 2.4L for light commercial vehicles and a ...

    Stupid and expensive.

VW execs should have blamed Putin's KGB agents for hacking their software while threaten Obama that VW Group will stop selling Porsche, Lamborghini, Bugatti and Bentley to American 1%, who would turn up the heat on their pawns in Congress, which in turn would slap VW with $100 million fine and put an end to the issue. Angelea Merkel can always threaten to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal as well as TTIP trade negotiation. Besides, pollution is a good way to control human population.

    :)

It depends on what media. This is der spiegel, before vw was caught, the governments knew in 2013 diesel emissions were too high in the real world than on the test.

They are also buying bmw diesel engines, perhaps to meet euro 6?

I wouldn't worry too much about toyota and diesel, they have a tiny market share in europe, and don't sell diesels in the US. If they are are caught cheating with diesels in europe they have $60B to help pay for it.
