I would feel much better if PKG 6 dealer would budge even a couple hundred but I'll be lucky if they agree to let me buy car since I told them I would never have paid for car to be inspected (translated by GM as never would have considered buying car) if I knew they were lying.

Friend is not looking into bargaining unfortunately. Just seeing if they'll sell me car at originally negotiated price. He's a real estate investor but not into conflict etc. He has a much smoother, gentler way of approaching things and seems to get what he wants that way. I'm too nervous and reactive.

I woke up wishing we could go up there today with cash and offer $9500 with hopes of getting $9800. Yes, I could probably be certified as crazy for thinking such a thought! : )

You're not crazy Daisy. Money talks, BS walks. You just never know what folks will do when they see greenbacks in front of them.

If I had cash, I would throw down $8.5K in front of them and say "give me the keys". If they want to sell, they will take it.

Hang in there gal. The best is yet to come. (y)

Wish I had a mechanic friend. In case PKG 6 falls thru is there an easy way to check if spark plugs are actually worn out on PKG 2? I could see belt looked more worn than others I've looked at. Looked as old as my Vibe's and I was told to replace that a year ago but they've been watching it and it's still not in danger of breaking. I'm assuming fuel injection throttle body would not be a quick peak under hood.

Just thinking out loud as usual. If I could physically prove this car did not have 90K service before getting Toyota inspection then maybe this guy would budge a little. More crazy thinking because he's so unpleasant to deal with. I can tell he's used to Mercedes buyers who are able to say this is what I want. Please take care of it.

Can't wait for the best to come!! : )

If you had the cash it might work. We paid cash for the van I was talking about and things got a lot more serious when I wrote out the check for our price and it was sitting in front of them. I'm ashamed to admit I did come up $100 and had to write a second check. I'll probably never hear the end of it from my wife (she's actually a tougher negotiator than me)!

If you could secure a loan from somewhere else - could you go in there with a $9500 check in hand? I've never really financed a car so I don't know, maybe it doesn't work like that.

Agreed with all the above. Everything is negotiable, let your money do the talking. If he wants 9500 to 9800 offer him 8500 to 8900. If he says No, say meet me inthe middle at 9000. The car isn't sold until the tail lights cross the curb. And in Indiana, you have three days to change your mind, too.

Daisy, if he will not take 9k for a six going on seven year old Prius then he is certifiably insane. What makes this Prius, to him, so special? To him it's just another piece of scrap iron. Or it should be. JTM

Yeah that pretty much sums it up. Unless you have to have the car that day (which is the worst position to be in buying a car), don't ever let them bully you into spending thousands of your hard earned dollars. There will be others...gen 2 prices may drop again when the market starts getting more of them and gen 3s when the gen 4 comes out too.

I have paid cash for two cars in my life time. The rest have been financed. If the dealer will not budge on the price, forgetaboutit.

There are other Prii out there. Just tell him what you want. Never ever feel sorry for the dealer. He may be upset cause you're not using HIS money guys.

The one dealer I've dealt with had a lease guy and a finance man. We had to wait on the lease guy, the finance lady was doing nothing.

The plug the numbers and they can change it any time. It's all on the computer. They pass a paper and say sign here X_________.
    Then the deal is done

OK...PKG 6 dealer is willing to sell me car. There's no way I can go back to low ball negotiating with him. Salesman told friend he knows I did my research so I'm assuming he's thinking I think car is worth 10K. How's that for a sentence.

I plan to tell him I wouldn't budge beyond 9K because I was upset about how things were handled. This may seem stupid but rather than throwing another figure at him, I might ask him what he can do to make this deal happen.

I did have loan already but processing time made it not equal to cash. I had certified checks written out to them and ready to go before I found out it had the collision repair issue. As close to cash as one can get but not available to toss on their desk.

They won't budge below original 10K offer. I can't walk away again and wait. I need a car this week. I've been looking for too long. You are so right that people will probably be getting rid of their pristine 2009's with 2016 coming out but I can't wait until then. Plus the dealers in this area really think a clean looking 2009 is like gold. They won't budge on their high retail prices.

I'm trying to get a 6 month warranty out of them knowing it costs them nothing and their risk is very low considering the car. I've unfortunately got my aggravated voice going on. You'd think they'd rather give me a couple hundred off and get rid of me instead! Hopefully the next post will be that I own a Prius.

On the verge of calling me new kitty "Prius" so I can at least say I finally have one. : } Then I can eventually say I have two!

Will there be a better opportunity in the future? Maybe. Maybe not. Oil is starting to firm up. If gasoline has hit rock bottom and starts to rise then Prius prices are going to firm up--and rise. You might be able to find a better 2009 (with a shorter warranty) but it won't do you any good if it is $11000.

They aren't going to negotiate and you didn't find a better car. At least they don't want yesterday's price plus 5%.

Work the best deal you can today. There will always be someone who got a better deal and someone who did worse. Just enjoy the car and bank the savings for your emergency fund.

I will repeat what a friend of mine did. She walked in, said I will write a check today for ________. You decide what you can afford. If they will not bite on that, they're nuts.

Daisy, here's hoping you get your Prius, any PRIUS. Then you too can be PRIUS proud. Any other car is priushistoric.

If you need it this week, buy it and don't look back. I think the pkg 6 sounds like a good car. You will love the extra features and enjoy the good MPG. I know I am loving mine so far! I'm like a teenager with their first car again trying to take any excuse to drive it. Good luck!

You guys are so helpful and supportive! Really appreciate your feedback!

I went for a walk while waiting for return call. Decided I'm really truly ok with pros and cons of either car. Actually my gut is telling me PKG 2 is better long term for me and cosmetically cleaner with "cozy" cloth seats as Wil said. Blue tooth phone not in my budget but was looking forward to better radio and even outdated navigation. I got so lost looking for some of these cars.

PKG 2 Mercedes guy is out today and his friendly partner is hoping to have mechanic look at car when back from lunch to see condition of belt, spark plugs etc. Verifying whether work was done elsewhere or needs to be done. Wish I had known. I would have called first thing this morning.

I'm going with car that is easiest to get today.

Guess what! My pushing for 6 month warranty worked. No to warranty...instead they're giving me $200 off.

PKG 6 down to $9800! Not the deal of the century but at least they budged a little. Ok...now I have to get over fact that cup holder has a large melted indentation on it. : )

I will follow up with photos tomorrow or Friday if all goes well!

If you got them to come down that's a big win. Great job! If you're leaning towards the 2 then you have leverage - if they won't give you the price you want then you just go get the other one.

As Hancock would say, good job.

It takes 3 years for changes to get through to the map database so every GPS unit is somewhat outdated. Unless you need to find brand new construction or they moved the road older units are still functional & handy.

I had cloth seats in the 2006. I didn't want the leather seats in the 2010 but it is part of the trim package. Can't beat the butt warmer in the winter as it is more efficient to heat your torso than to heat the entire cabin--especially when everything isn't up to temp.

Put a handkerchief in the cup holder--problem solved--and now you know not to put scalding hot stuff in the plastic cup holder.

Wish this one had butt warmer but it doesn't. I'll sit on a blanket or get a cushion. Prius seats are a bit lower than I'm used too.

The funny thing is the only reason I wanted leather was for leather arm rests on doors. Every car I've looked at so far except these last two have had really dirty and worn out micro fiber. I was ready to cover console with pretty cloth if need be but can't do much with armrests. There is a video showing someone putting a new fabric on armrests but he lost the footage showing most important instructions. I sometimes work in dusty areas and leather will be easier to keep clean.

Not sure how these leather seats are supposed to be maintained. I'll look into that when it's a done deal.

Reprocessing loan check won't happen until Friday so I guess you'll have to wait for photos. Heck you've waited this long!

I'm not sure when Toyota made SofTex standard, but assuming your car is genuine leather, this is a fairly good guide:

How to Clean Leather Car Seats: 11 Steps (with Pictures)

I'm not that particular. I typically use Meguiar's cleaner & conditioner. I've never found it to be lacking, as I've had leather last well over 10 years without cracking using it. A good cleaning/conditioning once every 2-3 months should be good. Usually I'll vacuum and remove surface grime before applying the meguiar's.

I think SofTex replaced leather in 2012.
