When I first saw $2900 I laughed. I thought to myself that's some dinky Toyota part, you shouldn't pay even 10% of that. even that would be outrageous (Yes I know it's a Prius--high tech etc)

but check this out. Used part on eBay for $120. lol. There's another for $125. There's tons floating around on ebay. Pay a mechanic like $100 to put it in. If you want, find a hybrid mechanic. There's tons of shops specializing in hybrids. But really anybody with a set of cheap tools should be able to put this in. At the very worst you might have to have someone w/ a computer align the new part.. Maybe not. But still way cheaper than $3,000.

A lot of you people aren't car people so you don't realize you shouldn't be paying $3,000 for dinky little parts like that. The used parts market is flooded with cheap parts. You can probably get a low mileage engine for under $1,000 if you needed to.

Oh. Here's one for $80: 2010 2014 Prius ABS Module Pump | eBay

Good news, I was able to get Toyota to Comp the $3400 service fee to replace it the unit.
I did Some additional investigation and sure enough there was Brake fluid leaking from the boot on the inside of the car. They Cleaned it off when I got it back and its covered it again. Short of a Chemical analysis, the fluid there and the fluid in the Brake Fluid tank were pretty identical in smell consistency and color.

I am not a Car guy, I barely know where to put Gas. I used 27 Gallons in 2.5 Years on my Volt.

For the Prius, I did find new parts for $1700. If its a Door Lock, wiper motor, or a hydraulic lift for the rear hatch, I'm okay with getting a Used Part. One of the eBay parts I saw was from a Prius that was in a Front End Collision that they were parting out. I know I'm a bit paranoid, though I don't think I want to Risk my family's life with a Used Master Brake/ABS Cylinder from a car that is suspect. A tad sketch to me. Brakes are pretty important in the car. I might do it in the Farm truck, but not the Car We tote the kids to/from school.

Just to clarify, Toyota paid for the complete repair? Good to hear!

The moment you press the brake pedal on your new part, it's used. There's no increased risk in using a used part. In fact, used parts are many times safer than a new part because they've been time-tested. Your new part barely left the factory and was engaged in one QC check. You have no idea how it will perform on the open road. You have more of an idea with a part that has 20,000 miles on it.

Brakes have more redundancy in them than you think. On a mass-produced part that's spec'd and designed by Toyota, there's little to no chance one would cause a catastrophic failure. Certainly not due to a little leak. but glad you got it fixed!

At least I know its not been in a Insurance Totaling Collision. (-; There could be some reputable used units out there, though hard to tell which is which.

Actually all of the cars tested in crash tests by the IIHS go to auction where their parts are sold to the general public. There's even some great deals on some Prius batteries from the crash test cars =)

Given a "Insurance Totaling Collision", there's really no risk in a part like a master cylinder being damaged. A brake master cylidner and the brake pedal itself are an extremely robust part. Any compromising damage would be really obvious by looking at it.

Just trying to help people save money =) No way in hell I'd spend $3,000 on a prius brake part.

    That part is $120 tops.
