30,000 Mile Service

    Greetings all!

    I received a letter in the mail from Toyota stating my 30k-mile service is nearing, which in this case is true and I am at 27k roughly. They want to over me the ToyotaCare Plus package which is a "Long-term coverage for up to 4 years or 45,000 miles(whichever comes first) for $299. This includes:

    - 4 additional services from 30,000 miles to 45,000 miles
    - They state the 30K service is $275 alone
    - 2 years of 24-hour Roadside Assistance
    - Service reminders to keep you on track

    Does this sound reasonable? I've done some searching around on the forums and it sounds like the 30K service is basic air filter changes, fluid refills, rotation/balance, and oil change? I have not done an oil change myself on my 2014 Prius but it shouldn't be difficult compared to all the other cars I've had(I've always taking it to the dealer since it was covered for the first 25K). I suppose my question is, if i decide to do this 30K service myself, how much would it really cost?

    no, it's a ripoff.

    cabin and air filters: $60. if they need replacement

    oil and filter: $50.

    rotate tyres and inspection: free

    then you get another oil change at 40k.

    Synthetic oil plus a filter, about $47.00 at retail price of components; now if you get a discount or rebate on the oil, $10/15.00 less.
    If you have the ability to do the oil change, raising the vehicle with 2 jack stands or shallow ramps, an oil filter canister wrench, tray to collect used oil, few rags for cleaning and 1 hour work; go for it

    The only items you might need pros for is the oil and filter change, the tire rotation, and the brake inspection (item 3). Apart from these, the extensive inspection list is largely superfluous, will likely be skipped, and really, it's no great loss. Anyway, the cost to DIY those, assuming you have the proper tools, situation and experience, is under $40. Largely dependent on how much you can buy 0W20 oil for. Up here the dealership sells Toyota oil for $5.90 (Canadian) per liter, the filter's a bit over $8, and the oil pan drain bolt washer around $1.

    The two air filters are totally a DIY item, and with both I would NOT blindly change them, ever. Just inspect first, and go from there. The cabin filter in particular I'd be more casual with, maybe just clean and reinstall as needed.

    Bisco mentions tire rotation should be free. I don't think there's a free lunch. If they're doing tire rotation for free, they have their reasons, mainly to keep you hooked in for other services I'd think. I mean: just try doing your own tire rotation. Obviously a lot easier with a garage with lift and air tools, but those don't grow on trees. For the diy'r, it's running around with a manual floor jack, safety stands, breaker bars and torque wrenches. The latter are actually better: too many shops ignore torque recommendations, especially when no one's looking. And regardless of your equipment, those wheels don't get any lighter, lol.

    I think the key is:
    Are you happy with the dealership service?
    Do you plan to continue your maintenance and upkeep through the dealership?

    If you answer Yes to both of these?
    Then you may want to consider extending the Toyota Care.

    Dealership maintenance and service IS expensive. Compared to DIY or finding "Joe The Mechanic".
    But if you don't want to do it yourself? And the idea of finding an independent mechanic or shop that might NOT be well versed in hybrid maintenance or even simple operation (Did they turn it off? ) doesn't appeal to you?

    Well even if it is a ridiculous up charge, if they SAY they are going to charge you $275.00 for the 30,000 mile service? Then they probably are. If you can get the same service PLUS the additional benefit of extended Toyota Care for $299.00, it's NOT a good deal in comparison to doing it yourself BUT I think there is benefit in a good relationship with your Toyota Service department IF you have had one up to this point.

    If you don't care or have been unimpressed by your dealership service? Take this as an opportunity to find another venue.

    So in short? Good Deal? Not really...but there are reasons you may want to do it anyway.

    Milpitas huh? Hi neighbor. Are we talking Piercey Toyota here? I find them on the expensive side but do satisfactory work. I took my car there for all the included maintenance. After 25k miles, I took it to a cheaper dealer.

    Let's do the math

    Dealer prices:
    30k
    $100 Oil Change
    $20 Tire rotation & inspection
    $100 Cabin & air filters

    35k
    $20 Tire rotation & inspection

    40k
    $100 Oil Change
    $20 Tire rotation & inspection

    45k
    $20 Tire rotation & inspection

    $380 Total not including all roadside and blah blah.

    Sounds like a good deal. However, if you do it yourself, you're looking at $100. (2 oil changes and a couple of filters) In that regard, it is a lousy deal.

    The Toyota care works out in your favor if you use the dealer for all the services. If the car should be sold or totaled - you loose the unused service. Unless they changed the program and you can transfer it. You can transfer the Toyota extended warranty.

    My cars go to a local mechanic for basic stuff. I change the air filters. Learning how to do some items is a good idea -- it saves some money and increases one's understanding.

    Thanks so much guys and I am very happy with the Toyota Dealership service. I would like to keep it and today, they have a 38% discount on anything and everything service so I think it'll save me a lot on the 30k service! Thanks so much everyone!
