Been googling for answers, no real luck. I don't see why my idea would not work, but my home fix-it skills are limited, so any advice is appreciated.

I have a fireplace in the living room of my house. The living room is on the second floor. A five-pound propane tank supplies a fireplace log lighter. I have never used the log lighter.

The propane tank sits downstairs, under an exterior concrete stairway.

Tubing -- half-inch copper -- leads from the tank, through a hole in the concrete, underground some 30 feet and finally comes out of the ground and enters the cedar siding of the house. From there, it runs under the floor another 30 feet to the fireplace, where, under the floor, it connects to iron pipe and emerges into the fireplace.

I have removed the log lighter in the fireplace and capped off the stub in the fireplace with the proper black iron cap.

I want to remove the propane tank and cap off the copper tubing under the stairs. I originally was just going to hacksaw it off, bend the tubing over (crimp it so to speak) and call it done.

But, thought, even though no one really looks at it, it would look better if I was a big spender and put out a buck or so for a copper cap and after cutting the tubing close to the exit hole, put the cap on, securing it with household silicone. That way, if anyone ever did want to reconnect, it would not be that big of a hassle.

Seems like it should work. Any cautions?

Why not do it right? Cap it off with a copper cap, and sweat/solder it on. You need flux, solder, and a propane torch.

    Three reasons:
    1) I have not done any soldering at all since 7th-grade electric shop -- some 40-something years ago and have no skills.
    2) I do not have any soldering supplies at all.
    3) There will be absolutely nothing in the line at all that needs any "solid" seal -- unless I am mistaken -- which I could be and which is why I am asking this question?

3a) Didn't you use to have the monkey avatar? I liked that one!

Nope, no monkey avatar for me.

Silicone sealant has acetic acid in it, which is why it smells like vinegar when it cures. The acid might cause accelerated corrosion in the copper. May or may not affect the seal down the road.

You can use a compression cap from Home Depot/Lowes, etc. Best to take a sample of the tubing with you. No soldering, just a couple of wrenches.

Pinch the tubing slightly, then force the cap on?

the copper caps fit snugly, just tap one on. what are you concerned about, there's no gas in the line.

Not really concerned about anything, other than I am a complete idiot when it comes to this stuff!

And, there should be nothing at all in the line, so if everyone thinks just slipping a cap over the end with no sealant is good, I'm good!

And, I guess, there is no real need for a cap at the end, but it will keep the bugs out, if nothing else!

    Thanks, all.

Just slide a copper cap on & tap it down like has already been mentioned.

yes, keeping bugs out will probably help a future user. if you hacksaw it, you'll have to file the end to get a cap on. you could just stuff a rag or something in it., duct tape, whatever, it's completely benign.

Pretty much off-topic, but one tip I heard for soldering copper pipe that was already in use, had residual water in it: push a chunk of bread up the pipe beyond where you're going to solder a joint. This will blot up the water, hold it away from the joint. After, the bread will dissolve/break up, flush out. If this was at a tap with a screen, you'd want to leave the screen out for a while, I'd think.

Aye, when I made the monkey comment, it was XS650 I was thinking of, of course.

Hey, both names start with an "X":)

Should start a poll on here about favorite avatars! I tend to like the ones with animals.

I also like the mmodem (hope I got that right?) pix. It is the black buns from the Burger King Halloween Burger -- of course I had a vested interest in that whole issue.

Or a little more for a sharkbite/gatorbite slip on.

Or just this. If the cap can be pulled off hand, just glue it on. Elmers will be fine. You aren't trying to seal it for use, but just keep bugs, dirt, and excess moisture out.
