Weird ticking sound, please help *video*

    We're on the same boat. @sfv41901 had the same problem with his old Gen III. He put on over 130k miles and he said everything was fine and nothing to worry about.:D

    Here is a thought. i have this clicking/ticking noise from axles at low speeds, but also an intermittent rattling or pinging noise at hwy speeds, best heard in 60-70 mph. maybe they are connected? i described it here (with little discussion that followed): Ping like sound, but no pre-ignition | PriusChat

    anyone else who has both of those noises?

    I guess i got my answer loud and clear.

    I have a 2012 prius v (lower case v) and all symptoms described on this thread is spot on. I have 54,000 miles and just noticed it about 1k miles ago. Dealer has no idea what it is the cause everything checks out fine. I really dont want to spends hundreds replacing an axel or boot only for the sound to come back again. Please keep me updated. Like many of you here im also frustrated with this problem.

    Not sure anyone else gave this answer. But most brakes have a metal clip that touches the rotor when wear is down to a specific level. Old rotors and non turned rotors are never flat so you will get a ticking sound even though all looks good/also the clips my be missing. Very common problems.

    Good thought but it's not the cause. While braking in "D" the tick can be heard.....but in "N" the tick disappears.

    I've said it a few times in this thread. The issue comes about once u lower the Prii. Once u reinstall the OEM springs, the ticking goes away

    right, except it's not completely true. at least for some of us who have OEM springs. on the other hand, the noise is usually heard when slowing downhill, so the front end is lower due to the car weight.
    Mental note to myself: lose some more weight (i'm still slightly over 200lbs).

    The tick comes from Regen braking. That's why it only ticks in 'D' and doesn't tick in 'N'. For many of us, it ticks only when we Regen brake and turn. At first only turning either right or left. Once the defected axle has been replaced the tick stops until the opposing axle defects and causes the tick when turning the opposite direction. As for hearing the tick with suspension mod and no more tick when return to stock, I think it's a sign of what the axle will do in the future. My car is all stock, never lowered and it still ticked. I eventually had both axles replaced under warranty. My dealer told me that since the tick is well documented on my car that they are willing to do one time goodwill replacement after the warranty ran out. It's documented on my vin number.

    My Prii has been ticking for awhile now. I just ignore it.

    All suspension components are fine. I guess I'll just deal with whatever problem it causes when it happens.

    Lowering the car is worth the ticking noise.:D

    So at what mileage should we get this? Just take the plastic playing card and cloths pin out of the spokes.:ROFLMAO:

    Wow, another reason to buy a new one.:LOL:

    BTW/traded that car instead of replacing the rear bumper.

    mileage varies greatly. Some of us had the tick within the powertain warranty, some out of warranty. one of my axle was replaced within the 36k comprehensive warranty and the other within the 60k powertrain warranty. Both axles got replaced under warranty. If the ticking is audible within the power train warranty, get it fixed. If the dealer gives you crap about bad CV joint tell them it doesn't do it in neutral. A bad CV joint will have the tick in neutral and in drive while accelerating.

    My 2011 Prius Three has been ticking for at least 6 months, maybe 9 and since about 25k miles ( it now has 34k miles total). No modifications of any kind to the car, none.

    Conditions -
    * light braking with light right turn of steering wheel, faint clicking, ticking at very low speed and to a stop (for example, it can happen stopping at end of residential street to make a right turn). It is intermittent and pretty faint, but a little annoying.

    * If I turn and brake in a sharp circle, over and over, like in a cul de sac (court), clicking does not happen

    Today, Piercey Toyota shop foreman acknowledged the sound. They investigated and recommended "Replace left front axle assembly and recheck" which should happen tomorrow (part coming in from San Francisco)

    Believe it or not I have a similar noise from the left front. It occurs only when slowing down after a trip on the freeway. Usually I hear it in the last 50 feet or so before I stop entirely.It never gets any worse and there are no other noises associated with it. If I had to compare it to something, I'd say it 'sort of sounds' like a kid who put a piece of cardboard on the frame of his bike to make it sound like a motorcycle. It's almost a flapping sound.... of course if I take it to the stealer, they will drive it for hours and never hear it. It doesn't do it all the time and I can't predict when it's going to happen again. I haven't found a way other than happenstance to make it occur so someone else, besides my wif and I can hear it! Btw it is NOT the brake pads moving in the calipers.

    I'd be curious if you get it sorted.

    On the way to get axle replaced, I stopped in a right yield channel, slight right turn, heard the ticking noise while coming to stop. Typical conditions to hear the noise.

    Repair order says "possible damaged internal axle bearing. Replace left front axle assembly, top off transaxle fluid, road test".

    I drove it around the area listening for ticking. No noise. Problem solved at this point.

    btw, the warranty paperwork listed it as $772 parts and labor job.

    To the poster above, I rode with the technician yesterday, he was driving and didn't hear it. Service advisor and tech were mentioning brake rattle from shims(?) is common, but that wasn't my case.
    Said I would try to replicate it, did my thing, then tech heard it. It's tough because it was pretty faint, but a couple years ago a shop foreman acknowledged another faint, intermittent rattle. They are trained to listen for noises, even though quiet.
    Go on the road test and demonstrate. Good luck.
