We have had a few mornings (in garage) where it would seem to not really id say a knock but maybe a clicking sound and it would quit right away. This morning that did not happen so i shut the car off and checked oil it was low.
Got under the car and can not see any leaking no oil on ground. So i had a QT i put in and that seems to quiet it after a few seconds.
I called local TOY dealer and they said its common for 2010 to use some oil and not much they can do. I thought what is a little it was at the end of the dip stick.
They said they can only fill it up and then have me come back in 1400 miles and see how much is used.

Should i be worried? I am concerned about this in such a new car and then TOY won't even look at it.

first, it's not that new. it's 5 years old. how many miles on her?

second, when was the oil last changed, (months/miles)? we need to figure out how much your burning.

my car made a funny sound and the oil was at the end of the dipstick doesn't really tell us anything.

    no need to panic.(y)

It has 88K to me thats new. Never owned a car with less then 120-150K
Its been 3 months and 8k
What i meant by the dipstick is that i have had cars that the dipstick never showed you truly what was in the car if it was not on the dipstick meant at least 3 qts low. Others will show you all the way down.
Anyway i run amsoil 0W20 extended drain with extended drain oil filter.

88k is a little early for oil burning, but not unheard of. 8k is 80% of your oil change interval.

the key now, is to fill it to the full line and start tracking it. toyota has a spec for how many miles it can go on a quart before they will do anything.

someone here will know how many quarts are measured on the dipstick. you're right, there's still oil below it.

I do know synthetic is quicker to burn then regular because its thinner and such. But i still would not think at 88K we would see that. When i had a car with over 200K and it burned some i used the cheapest oil i could find so if i turned its like $1 or something. at $8 a qt thats not cheap

Toyota considers oil burning at a rate of 600 miles per quart to be normal. Most people would not think this is normal at all!

You are out of warranty and unless you're prepared to spend thousands on a new engine, you would just have to check your oil level more often. Add oil as needed.

My 2010 is at 82k miles and it burns oil at around 1qt every 3000 miles. If I didn't check it often and went 10,000 miles on it, I would be down more than 3 quarts, which will cause serious engine damage. So checking your oil level often is key

8yr/100k warranty is for your hybrid battery warranty, your engine warranty was over long ago. And you have to burn more than a quart every 600 miles to qualify for a warranty

I finally got it to do it again. Check we oil it's full. It seems to do it when the car sits for a few days without being driven.

    Here it is

it's usually due to starting the car, and shutting it down before it is fully warmed up, which leaves unburnt hydrocarbons in the manifold. they get sucked in on the next startup and cause detonation.

So what does that service bulletin do? Replace the intake manifold with a revised one??

That's what the TSB says, "Remove and replace the intake manifold with the updated part" The TSB gives affected VIN #s and manifold part numbers if you're inclined to check yours.

Thanks. Never had the engine start-up knock, (shameless pun) knock-on-wood. We're in a mildish coastal climate, and virtually always using block heater for first start of the day. Around 57,000 km's.

We had this issue and the car shook like a Richter scale 6 earthquake! Bought it in to my dealer - showed him the TSB (see post #11 above), he didn't blink an eye, and gladly replaced it (since toyota was paying...). Took my word on the fact that it happened twice - since I told him he will unlikely replicate the issue in the garage. Took a day to get the part and a day to install (maybe 90 min?).

Haven't had the problem since after the replacement. But then again, it didn't happen for the 2 years that we had the car...until it happened.

Correct, happened to mine, started car to move it night before and only running less than a minute, next morning same noise as above for a few seconds. Thought it might have been a plug or two still wet (flooded) and stopped after 20 seconds. Never had it since.
