Rear bumper cover sooty discoloration

    Attached are a couple of photos. The first shows the strange black discoloration on the driver's side that is slowly growing to take over that entire corner of the bumper. Looking closely, it may be noted that some paint is missing below the (cracked) taillight. This paint is missing I believe from when we were rear ended in a hit and run while parked.

    The other (passenger) side shows the near pristine shape of the paint on that side of the bumper cover. The only thing I can think of that would cause this would be some sort of exhaust leak, but the exhaust exits on the passenger , not the driver's side which is what looks terrible on our car.

    Any thoughts?

    get some polishing compound (not rubbing compound) in a green can and try it on a small area to see if it comes off, if not Id say the paint is coming off because the bumpers are black under the paint
