Just picked up a new 4 Touring and the first thing I did when I got home was start the de-badging of all the emblems. I was a little hesitant at first due to the Gen 3 I had having alignment holes under the back "Prius" and side "Hybrid" badges. So I took some mason string and slowly worked it behind the badge. And much to my surprise and pleasure, no holes. If I would have felt the stem of the badge, it would have been easy to remove the string and press the badge back on. I also tried to remove the rear "T" badge for Plasti-dip, but they have placed the same sticky tape that is under the other badges. I'll have to work on that one.

Why would you do such thing? Isn't it illegal? I mean can you really pass the inspection for registration or do you have to put them back on every time?

How would taking off the Prius emblem, a hybrid emblem etc make one fail inspection? It's not like he is removing VIN plaques and such. Debadging means removing exterior emblems. Basically, no, it's not illegal to debadge your vehicle.

As to why do such a thing, some people like the look, some don't and some could care less. It's a personal preference.

I get the feeling there's something lost in translation here.. debadge doesn't mean remove all the VIN #'s. Only the exterior badging.

Good to be back! I haven't decided on Toyotafest yet. I know registration is coming up soon, but I haven't decided what mods I will take on first.

    iPhone ?

I believe that automakers put too many emblems on cars these days, for whatever reason. I like the clean body panel look. If someone doesn't know what kind of car I'm driving, they can ask me. I think everyone knows that a Prius is a hybrid. I don't need 3 badges on my car explaining that.

Congrats on the new 2016. Did you pick it up at Toyota RSM? They had a white 2016, first one for them, on display for about a week, before it was sold.

Thanks. I bought it from Toyota of Irvine. They were the only dealer I could find with the 4 Touring. The car at RSM was just a 4.

Did you consider painting the hybrid and prius badges black? That appeals to me...

Yeah considering I don't get to ride in carpool lanes here on the east coast, I don't care for hybrid tags on my car but I also won't do anything with them.

I guess it's much better with the badges - it looks kinda empty and bare now :(

I'm always disinclined to do such things. First off because there might be damage, or install holes. But also because some day you're going to trade-in or sell, and there will be puzzled looks and/or put-off buyers.

No. Just some mason string. Went real slow in case there were pins. I would have stopped and pressed the emblem back on. Maybe the car only being 3 days old helped. The adhesive was still soft.

Finally did mine, just the prius badge. I used thick waxed dental floss. (Couldn't possibly hurt the paint, right?).
Floss broke a few times, and left behind grey colored adhesive on the car.
Sprayed a little 3M 38987 Specialty Adhesive Remover on a wash cloth, and it wiped off cleanly.
10 minutes tops (for 1 badge).
