Here's a pic of my 3rd gen, 17" rim. Rough measure, just with a scale, the commencement of groove is 1/4" down from the level surface:

That is clearly different. There is no groove; the bore goes in about 1/2", and then ID gradually reduces. Bummer. The only recourse I can see to put caps on those rims (assuming ID is ok) would be to have a machinist put in the groove.

Again, ID on our 3rd gen is 54 mm, and the groove commences about 1/4" down, looks to be about 1/8" wide.

@krmcg, thanks for the closeup shots of the lugnuts, they're the same as the gen 3.

As far as the centercaps you got not fitting, it looks like you can dremel, or file down the "triangular" bits on the outside ends of one of each pairs of tabs. So it looks like there is no corresponding groove, in the centerbore, for the triangular tabs to seat into. Filling/grinding down that bit of extra material off one, or both tabs in each pair should likely get you enough clearance to mount them and get them to stay on.

i found this toyota center cap on eBay chrome finish, i added some gray plastidip, not exact fit but cheap enough to trim/filed the tabs and made it tightly fit, added some 3M tape to hold it up, just using this temporarily until someone will find a better solution.

updated, created a new thread for plastidip wheel.

Did you try taking down just one tab on each pair first?

The ones I got were too big to fit inside the hole.

As best I can measure - these are dimensions of the center hole for the 15" wheels.
The first interior diameter inside the wheel is 2.12 inches
The "land" diameter inside the wheel is 2.01 inches
The "flat" from the outside of the wheel to the beginning of the radius is .2 inches
The "land" width is .2 inches
the two radii on either side of the "land" are .08 inches

A thumbnail sketch would help with that.

I drew one, but couldn't post it. I'll try again.

Geez, that's what I was afraid of, and opposite of what's needed to hold a center cap: there should be a groove, not a protruding interior ring, for the center cap jaws. It seems Toyota, intentionally or not, is making it impossible to put on a center cap.

I really don't like their insistence that they know what's best for consumers with these plastic sheathed rims. This pushed us to the 17" rim model with third gen, and now they've closed that door.

Thinking furiously here. I see that the 17" wheels on the 2016 higher level models also have those plastic wheel covers. But the 15" 10-Spoke Alloy Wheels shown in the Accessory section do have a center cap. I wonder (a) if that is available as a spare part, and (b) if it would fit the stock 15" alloy wheel center hole. I'd be willing to buy one to test.

I'd be reluctant to machine off that raised ring and add a groove because I don't know what the ring is there for and because I don't know if removing it might affect the structural integrity of the wheel.

If I am reduced to making up something on my own to fill those holes, it certainly would NOT have a Toyota emblem on it. I'd have to think of something amusing to put on it.

pipes.jpg This photo is all about the pipes from Tom's. But check it out - there are center caps on the wheels...
