Hello, I'm new here, I've been searching the web for some help and so far haven't had much luck.
My wife was driving our 2009 Prius, she went to lunch came out started car and drove off, all of sudden car shuttered and multiple lights on dash came on, master warning, engine brake and vcs.
Had the car towed home, hooked up scan tool, and only code was a u0111-208. Loss of communication between battery ecu and hv ecu. I cleared the code shut off the car turned it back on and went to drive, same thing, same code.
as far as I can tell it's either a fault in can bus system, like a bad wire or connection. Or a bad ecu, either the battery ecu or hv ecu. I can test for bad wire but how do I test the ecu? Can I replace the ecu with having to have it programmed? I'm leaning toward the battery ecu, but not sure. The car has 156000 miles on it so I was thinking it may be time for a hv battery, but according to scan tool all modules had very similar voltages and none seemed out of the ordinary.
I would really appreciate any and all information on the code and any ideas or tips.
    Thank you

What are you using for a scanner? You need to be sure it is a Scanner that can read all Prius codes. There are probably other codes that you are not reading.

Subscribe to tech info.toyota.com so that you have access to the factory repair manual. It will give you a troubleshooting tree to address U0111 and provide you with safety information regarding high voltage present with the hybrid system.

You may find corrosion on a wiring harness connector, after you access the hybrid battery ECU (inside the traction battery case) and the hybrid vehicle ECU behind the glove compartment. Most likely, the former.

If the hybrid vehicle ECU is the problem then you will need to reinitialize the new ECU to work with the immobilizer ECU, and info for that procedure is in techinfo.

I have acces to a snapon modis and and I check in all other computers, no codes present. When I cleared the code all lights went out until I tried to drive. I will subscribe to the tech info. Hopefully it's not the hv ecu, I really don't want to have to bring it to Toyota.

Not necessary, you can reinitialize w/o special tools, just follow the process.

Sounds good to me. I will be subscribing and looking into this problem this week I will keep updating as I go. If I need a new ecu what is everyone's preference here, brand new Toyota or used salvaged

You certainly do not need to buy a new ECU. Just buy a used unit on autobeyours.com or eBay, or a nearby salvage yard that carries Prius.

    Just to update this thread.
I used the tech info to get the wiring diagram and checked the can bus wires between the battery ecu and high voltage ecu. The wiring and connectors all check out good, so I ordered a replacement battery ecu from autobeyours. It was. Differently part number but they assured me it would work. I installed it and have not had anymore issues. While I was in the trunk I load tested my 12 volt battery came back 78% since I've had the car three years and the battery is original to me I installed a yellow top optima. It's been two weeks now and almost 400 miles, so far so good.
I'm not sure if it's related to the colder weather we are seeing or perhaps the replacement battery ecu, but ever since then the battery level in the consumption screen pretty much stays green. Before it would stay between 1/2 and 3/4 blue now it's 7/8 and green? Also my furl mileage is down from 48 to 40.
Any thoughts on the battery and mileage?

yes, your battery icon should that stay in the green. i don't know what the battery edu does, but if it controls state of charge, i think you still have a problem.
and your mpg's are down because it's not using the battery effectively. surprised you don't have a light on though.
