I have a 2012 Prius C One and I use an aftermarket Jensen vx7020 Head Unit that supports backup cameras. I recently installed a backup cam myself Esky EC170-06

    I connected it as such:
Grounded the camera on the vehicle body (I sanded down the area to expose the metal itself, put a bolt/nut/washer to secure the ground cable with a clamp on the end).
I ran the Positive lead for the camera all the way to the front center dash using the Red 12v ACC/Ignition line that my HU shares so it'll always be on when the vehicle is on.
I ran an additional "trigger" cable from the backup Taillight Positive all the way to the front dash behind my HU where it connects to a "Reverse" cable (green on the jensen) telling the HU to switch to camera visual automatically when the car is placed in reverse.

Now everything works as it should, it switches to camera mode when I place the car in reverse, and additionally I have the option to switch to "Camera View" whenever I want regardless if I'm actually in reverse or not (Great for people watching at red lights, or to see a license plate number of an aggressive tailgater, ect. My back windows have very dark limo tint so visibility from my rear view mirror at night isn't very good).

Now when I first turn on the car I can toss it into reverse before my Jensen unit has even fully finished loading (about 10 seconds) and I get a great crystal clear image day or night. And after the Jensen is booted up, image quality remains the same, amazing. As I begin driving it stays great until I get up to about 50-55+ MPH and the ICE kicks in , then these horizontal white squiggly lines begin to appear and degrade the image quality. It appears the higher the RPM's go, the worse the horizontal lines become. Now if I park the car and wait for ICE to cool down after a few minutes, the lines fade away until I have a crystal clear view again. Likewise if I power off the vehicle, and power it on again, the image quality is back to normal. It's not a CMOS cam, its CCD.

I have heard all sorts of suggestions to the issue that have me confused as I don't want to screw something up or go through the trouble of rerouting cables/ect if it won't get to the root of the issue.

Potential "solutions/workarounds" I've research thus far:
    1. Relocate the Ground cable so it's as close to the camera as possible for the best possible ground. As of right now my ground wire is about 4 feet long since I grounded it off the wheel well area. I could ground it off the rear hatch door shortening the ground wire by 3.5 feet, could this help?

    2. Another person suggested removing the ground completely and just capping it off. This sounds sketchy to me as it could damage the camera or worse, my 12v ACC electrical system. But supposedly it's worked for some.

    3. Interference from power cables? I ran both the 12v ACC power line and the RCA video cable parallel to each other along the length of the vehicle on the driver side door sills. There's also a thick wiring harness thing that appears to run the same length and is held in place with those blue wire clips, could this be transferring power from the rear batteries to the ICE system/alternator causing a magnetic field disturbance interfering with the RCA line? Or is the 12v ACC power line itself affecting the RCA video? Would it be best to rerout the RCA through the headliner so it's far away from both the 12v ACC line and whatever that wiring harness is running to the taillights/rear batteries? This is going to be a pain in the arse, so I'd rather be sure its going to work before attempting it. I'm not even sure how to take the headliner off, it appears fragile and easy to tear/rip/break.

    4. Other suggestions were using diodes or relays and video feedback isolators ect. Basically a bunch of stuff I dont have the technical know how or electrical knowledge to attempt myself.

Attached is an image I took of the camera just after getting off the freeway (65-70mph) and entering the drive through at Inn N Out.[IMG]

What kind of video cable did you use - is it simply a one-conductor wire with RCA connectors on each end? If so, it may be picking up interference from other cables over the long cable run. I'd consider using coax cable whose outer braid is grounded on each end to help prevent cross-talk.

If lines ONLY appear when ICE is on then its something like spark plugs that could be the cause of interference (speculation). When you switch on the car ICE starts running for a little while, check if lines appear during that time also.

There are other ground wires close by like the rear number plate light that you can use, sanding down the paint (and in a wheel well) is not the best thing to do, think of the possibility of corrosion (no offence intended just my opinion).

From what I can remember DC power does not induce interference, that issue is with AC power. But you can place a temporary wire on the passenger side without removing any panels and connect it for testing if you want to isolate it.

It might be an inconsistency in the refresh rate. I'm not an electronics expert but my understanding is that the refresh rate controls the resolution and when not in synch with the capacity of the device it could create lines such as this. In the ancient past, televisions had horizontal and vertical controls to control variances in refresh rates, when the screen would develop lines like these before going to any extremes of flipping pictures. I would take it to someone who could test the refresh rate. It is about the signal being received in compatibility with the expectations of the receiver.

I tried all the "remedies" and nothing worked. Got a nice shielded RCA cable, no difference. Routed the RCA cable through the headliner and away from power lines, no difference. I tried tapping various different power sources vs the ACC, I tried the CIG Lighter fuse, Rear defogger fuse and the GAUGE fuse (used a fuse tap kit), same result, Hazy/horizontal Lines after the gas engine has to run. When the gas engine is going hard the image would even cut out. I moved the ground point to the rear hatch door for a shorter distance (about 6"), didn't change anything.

So I just went back to my original setup of using the Reverse Tail Light Positive for power, and also splitting that line to the "Reverse" wire on the back of the Jense HU to trigger the camera display ONLY when in reverse. I lose the ability to have the camera always on and view it whenever I want even in Drive or Park, but this way I seem to get a stable image most of the time while reversing. Even so if I've been driving for awhile and have to go in reverse while the gas engine is running, it can still have hazy lines. I'm absolutely baffled to be honest. The weird thing is when this happens, I can put the car into "P" or Park, then back to "R" Reverse, and the image goes back to crystal clear? Is it something to do with the Park wire? I really have no clue at this point and have basically given up. It's a mild annoyance, but really wish I just took it somewhere and paid for an install. Let someone else deal with this headache.

Oh well, on to my next project: Front/Rear facing HD Dash Cameras with Wifi (I moonlight for Lyft/Uber sometimes, good insurance could potentially pay for itself).

Bit of a long shot, have you checked that your video signal wire ground has a good connection? You seem to have tried a ton of different 12v sources already, figured someplace else might be worth a look.

I just purchased a ground loop isolator for RCA off Amazon: PAC SNI-1 Noise Isolator.

That's the only thing I can figure is the issue, maybe the chassis ground off my rear hatch door is different than the ground of my HU, and so the difference in -Negatives is being balanced out through the RCA video line resulting in the wavy/hazy/horizontal lines/interference? It's quite literally the only thing I haven't tried yet, so why not. Whats a 8$ amazon purchase anyways :)

Here's hoping this is the solution, I'll report back in a few days when it arrives and I have a chance to test it out.

When I did mine I ran the ground all the way back to the head unit, only because the cable was thin and the camera cable came that way.
If you haven't bought that ground loop isolator yet, you could try running a temporary cable from the camera video ground to a known good ground, accessory ground for instance, and see if that helps video any.

Too late, it's already on its way. I'll just wait till it gets here to test it out. Thanks for the suggestion though.

So a ground loop isolator meant for audio fixed your video signal ?
