Yes, let's back up a few centuries, beheading, guillotine's in the public square, especially castrations, ah...lions and tigers and...wait, let's not.
Hi theft areas simply need public cameras, as do all police persons.

"Thieves should be hanged." (one of the Conan movies)

When a horse thief was caught he got a fair trial. When he was convicted he was hung.

The certainty of getting caught and punished is the deterrent, not the severity of the punishment.

Asked around at work, I guess this particular crime is more prevalent and common than I thought. Which is really too bad.
Maybe ignorance was bliss, now I have something else to worry about.
Just never occurred to me, that someone would crawl underneath your vehicle and steal your catalytic converter.

Especially from a 12-year old Prius. Must be desperate.

I've had the cat stolen off my Tacoma while it was sitting in the parking lot at my wife's work. Those clowns didn't even have the decency to do a clean job. They cut the transmission fluid loop to the radiator in the process. The truck wasn't even drivable because of that.

If you're going to steal something, do it right.

Or just don't steal things. That's an even better idea.

Back to the topic at hand rather than the punishment! I spoke with the police, they think is at least a two person crew and that they are using a jack with a better operated drill to lift the car fast and go under and cut it. They hit an area, then move to another area of town days later.

My big question is this, my s/o drives a Prius and lives in Las Vegas. What catalytic converter device are you using, if you're using one, for your Prius? He wants to get one installed before he comes here next.

It took 2 weeks to get the new converter as they are back ordered because of all the thefts. Thankfully, my insurance covered all but the deductible.

My beloved mechanic, Avi, welded a chain to the new converter so it will slow them down. It would take 3 minutes instead of 30 seconds.

I would call them directly and see if the CATCLAMP generic will fit dimensionally from this firm. They may even be surprised to hear that one off a Prius was stolen as most CATS get stolen from high standing 4x4's and SUV's. But give them a call. I was one of their first customers when they opened up and that was about 8 years ago..when I lived in Paramount North of Long Beach.

    Apparently not. :(

Wasn't sure if I should start a new thread, but heard about Catalytic converter thefts are still smoking hot - LA Times from MNL.

Unclear if LAPD officer's statement referred to just all Prius generations, several or just Gen 2.

Sigh... :( Hope nothing happens to my cat in the few times I actually drive my Prius these days. Most of the time, it's in my locked garage.
