    Hello,

I've made a few posts recently regarding the wheel covers on the 2015 Gen 3 trying to decide what looks better. I have a winter gray prius II. Some people told me to leave the silver covers on some say take them off. For a few months I had the covers off then I bought the OEM center caps and painted them black. I also put these black lug nut caps on which you can see in the attached pic. I recently put the covers back on because they look too much like spare tires now with just the bare alloys showing. The covers make the wheels look bigger too. I'm not ready to buy aftermarket wheels and I'd rather not lose any mpg if possible. I did notice that my mpg went down slightly with the covers off too.

I was thinking that a silver rim band or a chrome rim trim might look nice with the covers off to highlight the wheels. Since the paint is winter gray I thought this might match well. Maybe buy some new OEM center caps and leave them silver/chrome. Maybe take the lug caps off too. There are a few different looks I can try.

Has anyone tried this? If so can you please post a pic?

Whatever you end up doing to those 15" stock oem rims will still look like stock oem rims. Best to do a real upgrade or just leave them alone

^ Yes. At least for 2010~2011 they were painted silver. Then it seems like Toyota twigged onto owners pulling off the covers, painted the alloys black to ugly them up even further.

This is a sore point with me, don't get it. When we bought our 2010 that was one factor that pushed us to the Canadian model with nice looking 17" rims.

The Prius division really seems to march to a different drummer. Walking the dog, saw some really nice looking (bare) alloy rims on a late model Corolla. It's not that hard.

I was very leery about removing my caps. I agree, they do make the wheels look bigger. But now that I have removed them I don't think I can go back. I love the look, which I thought I would hate.

Now...when it comes time to get new tires I will upgrade to something nice but my husband has me on an allowance and I have to save up for something like that. What can I say. I have to be kept in check.

OP, the wheel edge is non-standard, so finding a trim ring that clips on is nearly impossible.
Check out this thread and the vinyl trim installed on the wheel. They sell the trim material in chrome too:

I guess I do like it better with the covers off. Now I just need to get the shark fin antenna, some smoked taillights, and paint the front and back emblems black. I was thinking about the wind visors too but it's like a swamp here in Florida so I don't drive with my windows down very often.

We always use airconditioning to keep the traction battery cool. Installed window visors solely to be able to crack the windows open to allow hot air out while the car is parked in the sun. Also have the Heatshield fitted front windshield sunshade, highly recommend it. (y)

I've monitored battery temp (with ScanGauge) with and without AC: saw little if any difference. I know it's a commendable idea, trying to keep battery temps down, but AC use didn't seem to make a difference. Even running on cool evenings, battery will get up around 35C.

The vinyl trim is what I was looking for. Do you think silver would look good with my blacked out wheels?

I am with the two posts above....vinyl pinstripe tape.

A chrome trim ring or colored stick on molding I personally would not look to.

Try the tape, try different colors and go from there to your design goals.

    Good luck.

In your shoes I'd probably just put the damn wheel covers back on.

I used reflective tape when I did mine. I didn't do that great of a job since I knew I was going to get aftermarket wheels eventually. You can find them on Amazon and they're pre-curved in sections based on what wheel size you order. I recommend taking your wheels off when you do it so your viewing angle isn't skewed, and trim the sections that overlap. I was too lazy to do these steps and it started to look really bad as the wheels got dirtier.

    What it looked like fresh:

Looks good. I'm really interested now. Can the tape be cleaned to look new again? I would think you could clean vinyl.

Do you recall what width tape you bought? So did your wheels glow at night?

When somebody perfects this "trimming the stock wheel " thing, l'll be all over it trying to do it as well.

I don't remember exactly, but I think I ordered these:

They're not made of vinyl. I never tried to scrub them, but the power washer at my self-serve car wash didn't do the job at keeping them bright white. I'm not sure if they glowed at night since I was always inside the car, but I'm sure they light up when headlights or a camera flash shine on them.

There's a how to video on this link. The guy installed one in less than 2 minutes. Video says the track is curved so looks really easy.

Nevermind. Customer support said wheelbands wont work well with the rounded lip.

Watched the video. From what I see for our prius rims, we just have to be sure to put it on the second inward lip, not the outer one. That way it stays in. I saw someone awhile back with these on our stock black rims and I thought it was a set of beauty rings and went crazy from dealer to hubcap shop looking for them with no luck. This is what I most likely saw.
