    Half-marathon or 50-mile?

I am about to pull the trigger on the 50-miler. Anyone want to join? I could be convinced to drop to the Half. Not going to even consider the 100.

    Seriously:

If I were 30 years younger, you'd have at least one partner!

But, my ortho surgeon has forbidden me to do anything other than drink El Patron tequila. Seems I ruined my knees running when I was younger. Have had two surgeries already and am on tap for a third. YEOW!

Ran the Avenue of the Giants (link below) in Northern California when I was an erstwhile forestry major at Humboldt State in the 1970s. Or, I think I ran it, back then in Humboldt County, that was always the issue.

    Marathon

Ever run 50 before? Not me, but I did a 40-miler back in 1976. Felt amazingly well after, but, hey, I was 18 at the time.

Anyway, good luck and hope you have some response.

    WOW!

I did a brick* today: 8am 20 mile charity bike ride for Lions Club and a 10am 5k run for CASA. I can't imagine doing 50 miles. Go for it and GOOD LUCK! (y)

*Brick is a practice term for doing any two of the three legs of a triathlon.

I ran a 50 in October. It was pretty much flat -- no hills -- but I ended up being the first woman finisher. It was my first 50.

Ran a half in Colorado on my way back from Iowa a couple of weeks ago. It was snowing and icy. Not one of my favorite runs -- but come on people, this one looks fun!!!!

While dinosaurs still roamed the earth and volcanoes exploded, I walked from Campo, CA to Mt Adams, WA. 2550 miles in 155 days. Your MPH is faster but I have you on miles per tank. <G>

half Mar is my old limit...my new limit is probably 10k
We do Baltimore Marathon every year - Team of 4 so not so bad!

That's sounds cool - Ave of Giants we just drove thru and we went on up to Seattle.
    Pass the El Patron!

That's a good pace I might have been slightly faster but still with you in the half-fast category

Just have to run fast enough that the rattlers can't catch you! It's the vultures I would worry about....

I think I talked an uncle, who is 52, and a cousin, who is about five years younger than me, to join the madness.

    No one else...?

One thing I feel guilty about. I will have to drive to the race. Carbon footprint. O.K. I am not quite that far gone on the global warming thing, but the data has me a little worried. My area of study was amphibians and the little fellows are looking like they are in for a very difficult future.

I thought you'd have no more worries once the vultures arrive.

Not to mention all the foodstuffs you will be converting to CO2 during the run.
Oh well, take the Prius and car pool over there.

    Pass....
    With regrets.

When I was in the canoe club, I was forced to run even though our longest ship is less than one quarter of a mile in length.
If you need an emotional dispensation for your CO throughput, maybe a few PC'ers can plant some trees on your behalf after whatever mental gymnastics one would have to go through to arrive at how many trees would offset one journey in a Prius.

My dear wife wants some apple trees this year.
At the rate my grandaughter eats apples, that ought to be an offset multiplier.

    Good luck!

So much to think about here!

First, I signed up for the 50-mile. My uncle and cousin signed up for the half. I tried to get my mom to sign-up for the half also (she came in third in a half in Portland, OR a year ago), but she is afraid of heights (and rattlesnakes).
    So:

JimboPalmer: How I envy you. I always wanted to do that walk -- ever since I read my dad's copy of "Thousand Mile Summer" by Colin Fletcher when I was around 12 or so -- of course, Colin only did Mexico to California. In my opinion Cheryl Strayed (book and movie WILD) ruined the whole idea, but...I would truly love if you posted highlights of your trip (under another post so everyone could enjoy).

wjtracy: O.K., I can understand not wanting to do this Utah thing. El Patron would not necessarily be looked upon favorably there. But I have also always wanted to do the Avenue of the Giants (my grandmother grew up among the redwoods). What about the Avenue in 2017??? That is if I survive replacing my traction battery without gloves....

ETC(SS): At least you have regrets! Think about 2017 in Northern California! BTW, my apple trees in Oregon are not looking good. During my two-year hiatus in Iowa, dear husband Kevin did not bother to follow my fall/winter/spring care routine. Oh, well.

My brother John had the slides, his children scanned them all (backwards, and out of order) as jpgs and I got them in 2015. So I am trying to recall 'facts' from 35 years ago. Jess walked with us the first 35 days to Palmdale CA, then went into the USAF for 27 years. Joel Metcalf walked with us from day 10 to day 57, and I got out short of Mt Adams WA on day 155 to return to college. John made it another two weeks past US 2 at Stevens Pass.

I'd ride that far, but not run. I've come close to walking that far in a day, but couldn't shouldn't wouldn't do that again.

Huge kudos to you for being able to do this. Looks like fun. :)

Wait. Did you say Colin Fletcher? My grandmother gave me a copy of 'The Complete Walker' when I was a teenager. It's still on my shelf, a little worn.

I've done a trail 50K and a trail marathon (4820' up). Got 2nd place in my age group on the marathon... which was dead last... That was 11 years ago when I was faster. Don't think my feet could go the distance anymore.

Several ideas I've collected watching real ultra runners. Wear several pairs of socks - toe socks base layer, low socks middle, and medium cushy high socks. Some 100 mile runners change their shoes somewhere after the halfway point. 2nd pair can be 1/2 size larger to accommodate swollen feet. Several supplements to consider are DMG (~250 mg per aid station) to control lactic acid, liposomal vitamin C to help with inflammation. Avoid pain killers like ibuprofen - they can damage your liver even when used as directed, and don't improve times. Hydration, hydration, hydration.

Story from the Last Chance aid station at mile 43 of the Western States 100. One year we had a podiatrist and several of his students helping out. While we were waiting for the first runners to come through, the podiatrist was prepping his students for what they would encounter. "Now you've got to understand, you're just not going to see good blisters like these in regular practice."
