I reserved the Model 3 online, before the reveal. A couple of days later, before receiving my reservation number, I sent an email through the Tesla website, asking how one goes about cancelling a reservation, since I was hoping it would be a hatchback. I then decided to just let it ride (no pun intended) for awhile, figuring it might still be a good idea. Lo and behold, this many weeks later, I just got the following reply:

    "Hello,

This email is to confirm that we received your request to cancel your reservation. Your request is being processed and you should expect to see refund of your reservation payment to your original form of payment in approximately 15 business days.

    Best Wishes,

    The Tesla Team"
If I were Tesla, I might have at least asked for an email confirmation before processing the cancellation, but that's OK, I'm not so gung ho about this particular car that I want to fight to stay in line for it. So, good luck to all you other reservation holders, one less person in your way!

Actually, I would say not, since it was so slow, and they didn't do anything to confirm before they started processing it. Again, no biggie in my particular case.

I'm not convinced it won't be a hatchback like the S. Everything about the car just seemed more concept car than preproduction unit. There's so much left to design on that car in my opinion. I can easily see the all glass roof being axed especially on lower trim models. And then maybe the hinges can be moved onto the roof to become a versatile hatchback?

Anyway, count me in as someone who is also disappointed the 3 isn't a hatch. I won't cross it off my list given its single competitor, the Bolt is so homely looking.

The Model 3 will not be a hatchback.
The variants of the Model 3 very well may be, but the 3 will not.

The test ride cars were engineering prototypes. The biggest changes will be to the interior controls and the nose of the car, that's it.

I am not a shareholder. I understand why Tesla would want to touch your email once but I would have asked for confirmation and perhaps receive a comment worth passing along to marketing or Engineering.

As they flag the duplicate and excessive reservations I would hope they wait for a request to cancel so they can sit on the money longer. They can always be refunded when it is time to turn the reservation into an order.

I cancelled my reservation for the Model S for several reasons. As the commercial says, "no regerts". I deposited the check electronically so I got a souvenir.

I placed a reservation because one never knows what will happen and "Order a Tesla, screw the shorts" seemed like a fun use of $1000.

Yeah, I was willing to just go with it partly because I thought by the time they actually start building model 3, they might already be ready to go with a model Y variant.

So will the reported 400,000 pre-orders be recalculated monthly and updates provided to the public of the true number of pre-orders after cancellations? Share holders would be interested ;)

I expect this will be in the quarterly financials.
Since the reservations are considered a liability (on the balance sheet), and are all $1000 it should be easy to calculate even if they don't say specifically.

FYI, cancellation email was received May 2nd, and refund processed on May 13th. Good enough, but interesting they don't do anything to make cancellations easier and faster.

When I canceled a Model S reservation I simply called the local store. Very quick and easy.
I suspect the hoops Tesla and its customers have to jump through slows things down a bit.

I don't think so. Reservations for Model S, Model X, and Model 3 seem to be held in the same account or consolidated for reporting purposes. Model 3 reservations appear to be static.

How many people will have outstanding "reservations" for an S though? X, maybe.

It is true all reservations, from what I have seen are held in one account.
However, there are no longer any $40,000 Signature reservations (or soon won't be any). The S reservations are less than a 2 month supply of Model Ss.
While you couldn't figure out the exact number, it wouldn't be too hard to get an approximate count.

No, other than loaner vehicles and a couple of test drive vehicles, there is no inventory. Tesla builds on order, not ahead of time.
