When the ABS kicks in, like when going over a pothole while braking, it makes a fairly loud grinding noise. It sounds like a metal-on-metal braking noise. A quick google search shows that this might be abnormal, but some cars' ABS pump and valve systems do make loud grinding noise. Anyone else hear this?

Are you sure it's not just the brakes, as the ABS should be silent except during a panic stop, but it shouldn't be a grinding noise.

Being a new car, I wouldn't expect so. I'd be contacting your TOYOTA service. Brakes will occasionally make a noise when first applied if the car has been parked for a few days (particularly if near the beach), but not generally too loud.

I have 1600 miles, mostly city. So quite a bit of braking but I've only heard this noise the few times that ABS would normally kick on.

ABS normally wouldn't kick in unless you panic brake or drive in snow or rain.

I'd get your dealer to look at it, as ABS use will generally only happen in emergencies.

I think I could count on one hand, the number of times that ABS has kicked in during 60.000km of driving in my present car.

Not sure about icy conditions, though - I'll need to wait till the next ice-age to get them here.

I hear it too a lot when driving on bumpy roads. Check the dashboard and see if the vsc light flashes. It's easy to notice the noise because the car is extremely silence.

    Nexus 10 ?

I think what you're describing is what is the "normal" noise. I've also noticed that for the 2016 Prius, it appears that the ABS might be a bit on the "sensitive" side - but that's just my subjective observation. I do know (from a surprise April snowstorm) that the OEM tires are horrible in the snow, and that ABS activation was easily triggered in snow with the stock tires.

I wouldn't worry unless you are getting an ABS warning light. I have a place in my daily commute where I can make my Prius or Civic do it every morning if I am applying moderate brake pressure while crossing an overpass to road joint/bump.

I suppose it could be VSC - it's happened too quickly for me to notice any warning lights. But it's good to know I'm not the only one.

Eric, what brand of tires came on your Three model?
    Thanks.

Regarding the ABS, I haven't noticed any unusual noises while braking, and I don't believe the ABS has ever been activated. However, an odd thing occurs several times when my brakes will become very "touchy", and the slightest depressing of the pedal will have me being thrown forward in the seat. "Grabby" is the word I should have used. Anybody experience that? Just barely or lightly touching the brake pedal and my Prius will stop! And I mean STOP. But the majority of the time it's perfectly normal.

I think I have the ecopia (Bridgestones).

As for grabbiness - note that our Prius has two braking systems - regenerative and friction. In a perfect world, they would feel the same - but this isn't a perfect world. I've also noticed what I'd call a lot of 'grabbiness' especially when at slow speeds (when it transitions from regen to friction). According to my seat of the pants (a highly calibrated, objective measuring tool) - the Gen IV doesn't seem to be as smooth with the transitions between regen and friction as the Gen III - but I may be all wrong about that.

Long ago - when there was the recall for braking, Bob Wilson did a great job of instrumenting exactly was (and wasn't) happening. (I believe it was that the system was too quickly switching over from regen to friction when on slippery ground - which - for an instant - was no braking) - someone please correct me if i've mis-spoken.

Thanks Eric. Now that I'm aware of the occasional grabbing, it's not so bad. And it only happens infrequently... but when it does it definitely gets my attention. I like firm braking. Thanks for your post.
