    Hi all,

Thanks to your advice, and some research, I have decided to buy a new Prius c Four next month. I have owned new Toyotas before (an Echo and a Yaris), and I have never bought an extended warranty, because I always thought they were wastes of money with Toyotas being so well-engineered. But will a hybrid be different? Did you get an extended warranty? Is it recommended? Thanks!

I wouldn't waste the money on an extended warranty. The Prius has shown itself to be an extremely reliable vehicle. The 2016 Toyota Prius c has a three-year/36,000-mile warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile power train warranty and hybrid parts are covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Ok thanks. The hybrid parts are the ones I was worried about, and 8 years is pretty darn good.

The Prius C is rated as extremely reliable by Consumer Reports in every category. Their ratings are based on surveys they conduct of their readership, and I know of no other source that's as extensive, so I put a fair bit of faith in it. Given that, I wouldn't bother with the extended warranty.

I would caution against completely forgoing the warranty. Note your maintenance levels and how consistent you are. So long as you are proactive, you probably can forgo it. If you are a bit lax however, you may want to consider it. Also, warranties do have perks for those unexpectedly annoying problems that can creep up. For example, my car squeaked every time I hit a bump. Thought it was the transmission. Was actually the passenger seat frame which needed parts replaced. Was covered by my warranty.

While the basic warranty is great for these things, a reasonably diligent driver who keeps on top of their car would have caught these issues long before the factory warranty terminates. Hence, the only benefit I can see of the extended warranty is for situations when you are less than diligent.
