First time poster here. Thanks to all who have contributed the wealth of knowledge and information. My wife and I just checked out a friend's 2010 with 30k miles. We're planning on buying it within the month. My question and reason for posting (other than a way-too-long introduction) is the car has been sitting for 2.5 years with an intermittent start here and there. It drove well and there were no noticeable issues I could detect - I'm no mechanic by any means. Anything you guys and gals would recommend I check/have checked out prior to handing over the funds?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

welcome! 30k in 6 years? thats crazy. if you know the history, and trust your friend, go for it. shouldn't be any problems, except the 12 volt battery if it's original. they run a couple hundred bucks. all the best!(y)

Thanks. Yeah, he told me the year and mileage and I couldn't believe it. After seeing it, I believe it.

He recently changed the battery so no issues there. He showed me service records as well so for all intents and purposes I don't expect problems.

The hybrid battery (HV battery) needs to be charged so hopefully they've run it enough during that 2.5 year stint to keep the battery topped up. The battery and hybrid system is warranted for 8 years and 100,000 miles so check the in-service date so you have an idea when the warranty will end. The hybrid battery specifically is warranted for longer if you're in a CARB state (10 years, 160,000 miles).

Good info Tideland, thanks. We just agreed on price and I'm sending him the funds today. With insurance, getting the title, registration and inspection PLUS work and busy weekends, we won't get our new (to us) car until mid June. The waiting begins...
In the mean time, here's a teaser pic.

If you look really close, you can see the front turn signal light has a crack in it. There's some gunk in there so that along with the engine shield type of thing that hangs down in the front (see that Gorilla tape on the front bumper?) will be my first repairs. Those things and a good wash and I'll be good to go.

Looks like a nice car. Give us your state so we understand your warranty situation (CARB or non CARB). But even in the non-CARB case you have 8 years or 100000 miles

@wjtracy, I'm in NJ. New to this forum and Prii/Prius's? I'll have to investigate CARB further.

The warranty is 10 years/150,000 miles. Register the VIN on Toyota Owners Official Web Site to get the dealer service history and download the manuals if you don't have them. Which end of the state are you in?

New Jersey is a Carb State and has been since 2009, if it was originally purchased in a Carb State and is currently registered in a Carb State it is covered 10 years and 150,000 miles.

The 2014 list of CARB States in the US | PriusChat

I would consider the drain and fill of the ATF WS, then at 90,000 miles and every 90,000

    Hi.
I might be too late but the Prius manual recommends to drive once a moth (not sure if it was 1 moth but it's not relevant to my idea) for at least 30 minutes or do at least 16km for full charging cycle. So to test if the hybrid system is ok you can just drive for 30 minutes or do more than 16km and if no errors jump on the dash then you should be fine.
The obvious check would be to take a readout from the on-board computer but not many people have the tools. You might be able to rent one.

Drove it for about 45mins a mix of city streets at ~ 25mph and highways setting the cruise control to 70mph. No blinking dash, no noises or other odd sounds.
I'll check into renting the on board computer tool. Again, totally new to the Prius so please forgive my ignorance and thanks for the help and advice.

I'm in the Princeton area. Seems like the Prius is the official car of Princeton as I pass about a dozen on my way to 95 each day.

I also am not the most experienced one, just sharing ideas.
When I was reading on Prius's I found that many people say that if you leave the car for long time something will break but from what you're saying it seems like everything is ok and it's a really lucky find.

There's a way you can access additional information in the car but I have never done that myself so you would have to read a bit on the net on hot to get around in that menu:
He presents on how to check the 12V battery state but you can access the other information there too.

Depends on the model it's a different combination of pressing the gas pedal, power button and so on:

You've just shown two different things ... the first is about getting into the diagnostics mode for the audio/visual/nav headunit, the second is about putting the engine and transaxle into inspection mode (a special mode where the engine won't auto-shut-off, in case you are doing tests where you need it to keep running).

There have been multiple ways of getting into the headunit diags mode, one that uses the touchscreen, and usually another that doesn't (for those times when the reason you want diags mode is a touchscreen problem). The first way is easy to remember because it has been the same from Gen 1 through Gen 3 (they had to go change it for Gen 4, rascals). But for the first 3 generations you can just make the car ACC-ON or IG-ON, press the DISPLAY button, then tap the touchscreen six times in the upper-left and lower left corners of the framed area ... upper-left, lower-left, upper-left, lower-left, upper-left, lower-left.

People always get excited to find the headunit diags mode, but really, besides checking the battery voltage and various audio/visual/nav functions, it's not useful for much. Most of the other computers in the car can only be queried over the diagnostics port (most successfully with Techstream).

There are a couple exceptions ... in a Gen 3 you can also get codes from the heater/airconditioner by holding both AUTO and RECIRC while powering the car on; two-digit codes show on the heater display (00 if it has nothing to tell you). The repair manual gives the correspondence between those two-digit codes and the full five-character DTCs.

You can check the brake computer, airbag computer, and tire-pressure monitor computer for anything they want to tell you, by placing a jumper between the Tc and CG terminals of the diagnostic port. The brake computer will blink any codes on the brake warning dash lights, the airbag computer will blink the airbag light, and the TPMS computer blinks the tire light. A steady fast blink means nothing to tell you. Otherwise count the blinks, you'll get two-digit codes (five blinks then four blinks would be 54) and again, look them up in the repair manual to match them with full DTCs.

To check for codes in any of the car's dozen or more other computers, the manual doesn't mention any method besides using Techstream.

@ChapmanF, thanks for that information. Took me a few to wrap my head around it but once I actually spent time to read through it, it made a lot of sense.
I'm on a train right now on my way to go pick up my new-to-me car and will perform some of those diagnostics shortly.
