That's what happens when they forget to add insulation to the car :)

Pretty much what folks are getting for a first time Prius driver or people with 19 pound feet. Eco mode is for folks that have not driven a Prius for at least a year. Normal mode will be about the same once you calibrate that bionic foot.

Don't drive farther than 1/10 of a mile... and miracles happen! :)

4th gen seems much more eager to use the charge, right at start up. Hopefully they haven't pushed it too far.

At start up, I drove 5.5 miles through the park, (shift mode in "normal") and the motor never kicked in. But I never went over 15 mph.

How far can the Gen4 go using the battery only?

Was this a cold start? And you hadn't pushed the EV button?

Not sure what qualifies to be a " cold start."

I drove to the park, took my early morning walk. My car was off for an hour. (It was 64 degrees.) So maybe you'd call this a Luke-warm re-start? :) Then I drove 3 big laps in Normal drive mode. (I've never used the EV button as of yet.) When I parked again, within 5 minutes the motor came on.

How far can the Prius go in electric mode? And at what speed?

With 3rd gen, parked for an hour, I'm pretty sure you'd get engine start up. I think what's referred to as "open loop", a sort-of default parameter set, till the car re-establishes it's perceptions of engine state and so on.

Sometimes if I've just shut down, restart in a few minutes, warm day, it'll happily tool along in electric-only for a block or two, but certainly not miles.

I think this behaviour is hands-down why the fourth gens are returning such stellar mpg numbers. The only thing, I hope they aren't overtaxing the battery. They've been at this game for a while now, so hopefully all good.

    Thanks, Mendel.

I was driving as slow as possible; 8 mph, 12 mph, up to 15. Barely touching the gas pedal. Now I'm curious to see what the EV mode does.

Always been using normal mode. Felt like a Ferrari when I tried the "turbo" mode briefly. I mentioned briefly as I didn't want to have too much fun.

    LG-H901 ?

Update: Maybe it's my driving style, or how the car is used (mostly highway). But my calculated MPGs is only 1.5 less than the dash display. This observation has been consistent.

I have observed with my Gen 3 that EV mode can be used if the car has only been parked for a few hours. Great for moving it in or out of the garage.

The terminology is tripping us up: I mean if you haven't pushed EV, the car's propensity to keep the engine off, if you start up and drive slowly on level roads, say through a parking lot.
