    Hello,

It appears that there isn't a 1st gen support page so I hope I can get some answers from some of the more experienced members. I have been searching for a week or so. But can't find an answer.

I have a 1st gen commuter that has been a great little car, 53mpg solid, never needed much. About two weeks ago the coolant pump for the inverter died, common issue.

I had a code for cooling malfunction and inverter failure, so I replaced my inverter and my pump. Went to start the car, and it says Ready. The headlights come on, it runs on battery power for a few moments then dies after moving a few feet.

Now getting code 3100. Got a new HV ECU. Same behavior. Re installation of all connections. Still the same.

Need some help if anyone has had the experience. I searched all over, is there some process to re initialize the hybrid system???

Originally I had just replaced the battery thinking that was what it wanted, since the battery light came on. The yellowtop allowed me to drive like 2 weeks before the car just died in crazy traffic. So I put the old battery back in when I was able to read the codes and returned the optima thinking it wasn't needed.

I feel like I am so close here..

    Thanks

There really is a Gen 1 forum. It is hard to find, because it is a subforum of the Gen 2 forum (for reasons nobody but Danny knows, apparently, because a Gen 1 Prius is not a subcar of a Gen 2 Prius) and no past request to make it easier to find has met with any success.

Anyway, you can ask the mods to move this thread to that forum, more Gen 1 owners may see it.

In the old days, cars were fairly complicated things, and if one didn't work, you'd have to (first) find out why it wasn't working, and (then) correct that problem.

Prius came along and it's a great car that rewrites a bunch of the rules, but it hasn't really changed those. You've mentioned getting a P3100 code, but that can come with about 78 different 3-digit INF codes telling you what sort of problem the HV ECU detected. A bunch of those are internal faults (which you would indeed fix by replacing that ECU) but not all of them ... did you have the INF codes read, and if so, what were they?

For that matter, what are you using to read codes?

You know where to find the diagnostic workup steps for each code in the repair manual at techinfo.toyota.com, right?

You might be very close, if you just dig in to tracking down the problem systematically and taking care of it.

Thanks to everyone who replied, I am not getting any info code with it unfortunately.

I am just using a basic code scanner. It is only showing the 3100 and it cannot define the code itself.

Because I am at the red triangle of death, I can't get the info from the mpg screen by doing the button combo? Is that correct.

Coolant is circulating, bled the system. The gas engine won't fire and it seems like it's not giving the signal.

    Scanner is an innova 3040

Even that's not bad for a basic code scanner, but if you're going to have the car a while, you will get a lot of benefit from a scanner that can give you the Prius-specific information from the car. There are a bunch of threads here on PriusChat about it (many of which have the magic words "mini vci").

That feature's overrated anyway ... what you need when you're getting a code is not some one-liner fortune cookie about it that might be built into the code scanner, but the several pages of description and workup steps you will find when you look up the code in the repair manual.

I'm pretty sure I've seen it work on win 7, but it wasn't me setting it up ... maybe someone who's done it can share a tip or two.

Does 06F067 and 06E067 mean anything to you? My mini vci isn't working worth a ........ but my cars diagnostics are showing those codes.

Are those from the 'check' screen on the multifunction display in the center of the dash?

Everybody gets excited when they find that screen, but really the only codes you can get there are for the audio/visual stuff, Nav if you have it, and maybe the Gateway ECU, plus the status of the taillights, parking brake, and 12 volt bus voltage. Nothing about any of the rest of the car.

For everything else, it's best to get your Mini VCI going.

Works great on Win7-32bit. If you have Win7-64 it's easiest to install XP mode and run it under that.

If you don't want to do it in Virtual XP, there are directions for manually installing the 32bit driver into Win7-64 bit.

All of your efforts should be focused on getting your MiniVCI to work. Buying a $100 XP laptop on craigslist might be worth it for now and future.

Nope. Gave up, computer never could talk to the car. Dealership gave up too after 4 hours of diag and time on their techline they stopped. Car is being donated, which really blows, because it was super clean.
