So, only my tweeters are working and none of the 4 door speakers. I have the non-JBL package (I believe package 2). I've checked fuses and tested with radio compared to CD player and still only tweeters. I'm assuming a wiring issue, but haven't had time to take the doors and dash off to look at that.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on what it could be before I start ripping everything a part???

i would pull the radio first, since all the other speakers are out. hopefully a connection back there, but the radio could be broken.

it does sound like a toasted head unit. the tweeters are on the same wires as the front door speakers, so that's not likely a wiring issue, and all 4 speakers aren't going to have wiring issues at the exact same time. silver lining is that now you have a reason to replace the factory garbage with a quality head unit, something which Toyota didn't offer.

Any thoughts on a good head unit? brand or type? I'm not that big into car audio and am not sure what's good. I don't need fancy, Just want it to work...

can't go wrong with a name brand: pioneer, kenwood, etc. there are a few other bits you'll need to keep your steering wheel buttons working, and an adapter harness. I would contact crutchfield.com. they will hook you up with everything you'd need, plus they throw in the harness and instructions for the install free when you buy a head unit.

if you don't know how to solder, you'll need a friend that does. stereo shops are frequently full of drop-outs that don't care if they butcher your wiring harness, and they use cheapo connectors instead of soldering connections.

So.... I changed it out with a Kenwood unit and even got an adapter for the steering wheel control, all from Crutchfield. and final result... still no sound out of the speakers. Ugh. All wires connected. Radio turns on, etc. just no sound still.

Guess I should test the speakers now???

    Hi King,

We're having the same exact issue in the same model car (2007 without JBL). All is silent except for the tweeters and there's the faint-but-distinct smell of burned circuitry in the air. The smell made me suspect the receiver at first, but it doesn't make much sense that the tweeters, which are simply wired in parallel with the front mains, would still work.

So I just pulled the receiver a bit ago and tested resistance on the receiver connectors (speaker side). The resistance was up in the megohms on all of them, indicating some connection but probably a burn in the coil. I then supplied very brief 9V pulses to each line through the connector and only the tweeters responded.

While it's not a certainty yet, it is more likely than not the speakers at this point. While I agree seeing 4-6 components (speakers) all go bad at once vs 1 component (receiver) in natural troubleshooting would point to the common source as being more likely, the nature of a stereo system reduces the accuracy of such an assumption because if you blast the radio, all the speakers are getting hit pretty hard. If lightning hit your house main and a bunch of appliances stopped working, you'd naturally suspect the lightning damaged all those devices rather than thinking there's just a problem with your main line--that is unless you weren't even aware there was a surge.

Congrats on the new head unit, it's a nice upgrade either way.

damn. I would think anything that blew out all the speakers at once would have been painfully loud. I would take one of the door panels off and hook up another speaker, even a house speaker, to see if anything is getting through the wires, and put a 9v battery directly across the door speaker to see if it gives you a pop.

Amazingly, It was the speakers!! Actually tested all 4 speakers with my radio in my house, no noice and no reading on a multimeter at all. and then took a house speaker and tested with car wires and worked great... Never would've thought all 4 would be dead. the new rockford fosgates from Crutchfield should be here Friday.

Cant wait for this to be done.
