Ahh, so that's my problem - only one driver here, only one car. And a proposed driving trip next winter well out of range of service vehicles. My experience with tyre outlets here is that they must be smaller than yours in USA, and very often they need to order in my tyre size.

Not when driving in a very rural area, a day's drive or more from home, in an area without cell phone service. Having two other vehicles sitting in our driveway at home doesn't do squat.

When taken out of context, I would agree with you as well.

If your 'a lot more options' context was referring to borrowing a spare from one of those other household vehicles when taking road trips, then I must point out that my other household vehicles are a Gen1 Integra and a current generation Forester. They all have incompatible wheels and spares.

I agree. Last year we ended up replacing all four tires on our 2008 Prius for just that reason. We only had a nail in one tire but it was in the sidewall and not repairable. The tire seller didn't have a match to the tire and did not recommend putting an odd tire on with three others. This example has nothing to do with a spare tire or not except to show that I still do get flat tires and still do need a spare tire.

I understand a spare tire might save a few gallons of gas per year, but on a cost basis I see several ways that saving a few dollars on gas is not a bargain. The cost of delays, towing, etc. can easily outstrip any gas savings.

For many who won't have a flat they will be fine with a repair kit and no spare. For those who do have a flat they will wish they had a spare. I think a blanket statement indicating all Tesla owners are fine with it isn't telling the whole story. There are still cases where cell phones won't have a signal.

I will not buy a car without a spare tire.

agreed, but i put a spare in the hatch. you're fortunate, in that you can rework the styrofoam.

Indeed, they died in 110 degree heat waiting for help.

This is pretty scary for cold and hot climates. You need to throw a spare in the back if you are going into desolate areas and no phone coverage.

I am content knowing that if I get two flats (or 30) in the boonies, I will have a reasonable chance of repairing them, and that between the Glock trenching tool and other crap that I stashed in the void left by the removal of the left-most foam insert I have enough tools that my manhood is intact even without a spare.

To be honest, I am happy to have a built in excuse to call for a tow truck -- if needed -- which are available 99% of the time in my world.

I have the Goon and the mini air pump if something happen I be ready. My spare is in my house. If I am going to drive long distance. I just put the spare in the back. Problem solved. Last thing I do is call the Roadside. If the phone don't work and the car is idle then I am in big trouble. This mean I be losing a few pounds from the walk that I be doing it.lol

The cell service coverage maps show very stark regional differences in coverage. Your end of the continent has nearly solid coverage:
    Coverage Locator
(I'll skip the ATT map for now because it is too generic, much more 'optimistic' than reality.)

My region has vastly more map 'white space'. I cannot travel to visit and care for dad without passing through several of them. I visit others frequently. Last week was spent off-line for hiking in Oregon's Eagle Cap Wilderness, car camping in various periphery zones and road corridors with no service. Well, I did get a single bar from the edge of the Wallowa Lake State Campground marina, enough for some (not all) texts to get in and out (some garbled) if I fiddled out antenna orientation and had lots of patience. Voice was not possible.

Due to topography, prohibitions to installing cell towers in Wilderness, and insufficient market demand to install towers along much other non-Wilderness USFS road corridors, I don't foresee much of this white space getting colored in anytime soon.

OK, real life story that is nothing.

5 PM on a Monday I ran over a razar blade stick. Stopped by my favorite shop and it was closed on Monday. My aluminum jack and 4way lug wrench was in my wife's car. So I pulled every thing out of the spare tire area and proceeded to change the tire since I figured I could do it quicker than a tow truck. BTW bad neighborhood and I wanted out.

Let me tell you how piss poor that factory lug wrench and jack are:LOL::mad:. So got her done and went home and put the aluminum jack and deluxe lug wrench in my car and bought a second set for my wife.

Well no spare tire this time and no space to put an aluminum jack.

Yes I can call a tow truck but that is not always the best option or even available.

I bought a never-used Toyota Corolla spare donut at a junkyard about 20+ months or so after I bought my spare-tire-less PiP. Less than a month later, I ran over steel sharp stuff in the road and had a flat while rushing to a friend's naturalization ceremony. Having the spare donut allowed me to make the ceremony. The donut has been living strapped in the PiP's cargo area ever since.
