I need a new tire for my spare. It currently has a T125/70D16. This seems to be a fairly odd size and I cannot find one locally. I can get one ordered, but the starting price is nearly $200. I am thinking of going with a 125/80D16, which I can get for about 1/3 the cost, delivered. Anyone see a downside, other than potentially not fitting in the spare tire well. The 80 will be about 1” larger diameter than my current spare. I think it will fit, but will be tight. Anyone try this?

As far as matching the other tires, this actually makes it closer to the diameter of the tires on the ground (24.5” outside diameter, vs. 24” for the 80 vs 23” for the 70).

    Thanks

    Thanks...

TireRack is where I get the $200 cheapest option I can find...$170 + $12 shipping + $15 to have it mounted locally.

I've tried the closest Pick-n-Pull and one other salvage yard over here close to work with no luck. My mechanic out where we live called around there and had no luck. I think now I understand why they are so popular from the junk yards.

IIRC from the last time I looked in my spare wheel well, there's at least an extra inch around the tire, so from memory I think a 125/80D16 would fit. I'd take a tape measure and just double check that there's enough space. It's actually possible to fit a full-size spare there, but you have to deflate the tire and carry around a decently powerful tire pump with you to do so: How to Install a Full Size Spare | PriusChat

So long as it fits in the car, there's no disadvantage I can see, in fact the tire should handle slightly better as it's closer to the stock tires
