The trouble is that one doesn't know whether an inverter was "damaged" before the update, especially in a car bought used, mine for (another) example. I don't know whether to worry about getting stranded by "the usual inverter problem." The update was supposedly performed shortly before the original owner traded in the car.

ok so Toyota called and said that they had to take apart the inverter to see what caused it to fail. so after a day of waiting they called me back and said it is covered from that recall stuff. the other part is not covered which I forgot wat its called but its way less than the 4 grand. lol so total I gonna spen $800+ which im ok wit because its way better than paying 4gz. still don't have my car back but they said looks like by Friday (tomorrow) I will get it back which is pretty fast considering how busy they are and brining it in "on call status" .

Do you know what trouble codes your prius showed during the issue?

This sounds like what just happened to me yesterday except I was a few blocks from home so I got it home and then it would not go into Ready status again.

I was driving and a guy squeaked in a left turn in front of me, causing me to hit the brakes (and the horn!), then the error message came up. I didn't have the same power any more but could keep driving. Was only about 5 blocks from home so I got it home. I looked up the hybrid message on here and there seem to be a lot of things it could be. It's a 2010 that I got in November of 2009 and it still has the same 12v battery, but the accessory mode comes up fine. Should I bother checking it? I'm nervous since I've heard talk of ruining things by doing the wrong thing.

I have an ODB (?) scan gauge thing that I never ended up using, can I check the codes with that? I also have a battery charging thing and a volt meter I got when my 12v battery had died but again, I never ended up using since the battery ended up working next time.

I'm sure I'll have to tow it in to the dealer, my concern is that I have been in two accidents that the car has not been in the body shop for yet as I'm waiting on the insurance company to settle with the other driver who is not admitting fault. So the front and rear bumper are damaged. Any reason this should pose a problem when taking it to dealer? I've been driving it without issue for months since the front end accident and a year since the rear end one.

So, any advice on what steps should take?

Absolutely use the scangauge and write down the error codes you may only get the main codes not the subcodes.

Very unlikely this has anything to do with 12V battery but nothing can go wrong if you charge it for a few hours (car turned off of course)

You are in a CARB state so you have 10 year/100k miles on the hybrid powertrain that includes the inverter which is most likely the issue. This seems very much like my break down. I actually drove to my Toyota Dealer...

Be careful though since almost certainly the HV battery can no longer be charged so even if your ICE may run HV battery can be depleted which then could be expensive. Most likely you would have to get the car towed to a toyota dealership or independent (but hybrid) shop.

    Good luck !!!

Thanks for the quick response! Of course now that I tidied the house I don't know where I put the scan gauge. I had it out to put in the car but it never made it... I'll have to grab the app too... forgot what that was... I'll find it.

So the visible damage to my car should not worry me? That's what's got my stomach churning now.

If it IS scangauge you do not need anything else. If it is just an ODBCII scanner (bluetooth I guess) then you do need an app on your smartphone there are free ones for andriod not familiar with iphone. but again if this is the inverter you will run down the 12V battery quickly since HV battery cannot supply power anymore ... you said it will not go to READY so ICE probably will not come on either. In my case I did stop and start the car a few times right after the incident and in 10 minutes or so it was with toyota ...

If you are sure that those damages did not involve anything with the drive train (only body) then it should be OK. I strongly suggest take pictures at the dealership when you hand the car over (some dealership does this routinely rather than the paper write up). Especially with the front end damage (that may possible involve something ....) I would take picture of the open engine bay as well... to prove there is no damage there....

Yeah, just a scanner, I found the app I recognized... Torque. (I'm on Android)

And good idea with the pics. Will do that now. I looked inside the engine before and this morning and everything looks fine. And as I mentioned, the car has been running fine, but definitely want to be sure dealer can't make something up.

The inverter pump is right in front of the inverter. Depending on where the front end damage has been done, it might have gotten the inverter pump. Have any pics of the damage?

I have those same two codes! So I'll tell dealer I think it's the inverter then.

Here... the front end didn't crunch in, I'm sure it's only bumper damage. The car made a left turn in front of me so they went across my front end as I hit them. And the codes I got matched the original poster's codes if that makes any difference.

Yup. Only panel damage and to the ice side. Unfortunately that nice Barcelona red paint is damaged :(.

Had the car towed in early this morning and got a call that it was the inverter, it's covered by warranty and the car is ready for pick up! I was napping when the call came so I'll pick it up tomorrow. I guess it all worked out pretty well, it failed close to my house and now I know it's fixed for the future.

I'm still running the original software on the original inverter installed in Fall 2009. Just because a part may fail it doesn't mean it will.

My Gen 3 just went down with these trouble codes and was towed to my independent mechanic. I've been combing through the recall documents on the nhtsa website and can't find anything that states this 15 year warranty extension. Does anyone know where to find that before I have the car taken to the dealer? Bought used so I don't know if the recall was done but it was in the used lot of a Toyota dealer so
    Thanks

My vehicle was repaired under the extended recall warranty. Really dodged a bullet there. 2010 with 156k miles.
