Gasoline Smell??

I've owned my '16 Prius Two for about 3 1/2 months, filled it up around 7-8 times without a problem. I filled up 4 days ago, put 40 miles on, and everything is great. Today I parked my car outside in direct sunlight for 9 hours (90 degrees on black pavement). I smell a strong gas odor outside the car (I thought it was a nearby gas station, so drove away without inspecting). I got home and noticed the smell was coming from my car. I checked the gas cap, and it was barely on (not sure if I forgot to screw it on all the way). I washed the car thoroughly, and don't see any leaks anywhere, but the smell is definitely by the filler neck, and in by the fender.

Is it possible that the gas expanded and leaked out the filler neck? I'm thinking I'll drive it and see if it happens again. Any thoughts from anyone on here?

Probably gas expansion. My salesman recommended that when fueling, stop when the pump stops... no 2nd pump as we often do. If we overfill the gas tank and the neck, the excess gas allegedly goes into a small waste container at the top of the fueling neck.

Yes it does, it is also there to recover gas vapor which condenses and then is reinjected in the tank - I see that very often when I fuel up - fuel comes out from the side of the neck.
This is also what causes MFD inaccuracies.

Approx. where do you live and what gaso brand did you use? Low sulfur regs probably help to make gaso smell better, but certain smaller companies in non-RFG zones may have extensions. Also some areas have higher vapor pressure allowed.

In the past, with my Camry I always tried to squeeze in 2 or 3 more dollars after the pump clicked off. I did, and gas ran down the fender.

With my Prius, I yank the nozzle out right when the pump turns off. But I feel like I'm getting cheated out of a couple gallons.

Please do a safe move for yourself and take the car to a dealer. It is brand new, and if the inside pressure in anyway popped the gas cap loose, this is not good. It may be nothing, but when it comes to smelling a gasoline odor from your car, this can't be good and it might be dangerous.

One click is all I get with my Gen2 even if I try.
The other day I tried sitting on the bumper to see if I could fill it more with a slight slant.

**UPDATE** It's been a day and the smell is nearly gone. I washed the car, and no more smell outside, and no smell in the garage with everything closed up. I'll chalk it up as a freak thing unless it happens again.

I have the "gas smell" this morning. I went to top-off my tank. It's just a simple case of me overfilling it a bit too much. (I had the same smell with my Camry. Never had a problem.)

As soon as I left the station, my mpg display shot up to 65. :) Weird.
