Battery level at 30% when i picked up my Prius after car detailing

I went to pick up my Prius after around the 4-hour interior detailing appointment. My Prius got a external automatic car wash then it got the internal detailing. The battery level is at 30% when i turned the car on. I suppose if the gear is In Drive or Park mode, the Prius will recharge it self back to 50% if it goes under 40%. A/C was on.

Does people who works on cars like to put car in Neutral (NOT Park)? Has anyone experienced low-battery scenario like this one? What level of discharge will harm the battery?

Has anyone tried putting the Prius into Neutral with the A/C for an extended amount of time? What would happen?

Pretty typical for a Gen2 to get into the purple (2 bars) just sitting in PARK with A/C on. Pretty typical for shop work to run the batts down, leaving doors open etc

Does that risk draining the HV battery though? What will happen if I put my car into neutral for extended amount of time and the SOC goes to 0?

It should not go under 40% on its own...maybe they drained it in the car wash part in neutral down under 30%, then moved it 100 ft to the detailing area and shut it off before it could recharge further. From what others have said (I haven't gotten mine under the two bars or about 38% yet) it must have been screaming at them for a recharge after the car wash when they went to move it. I doubt one discharge to 30% will hurt it, just glad it didn't go down so far it couldn't start the car to charge it back up.

To answer the question about what will happen if it runs down, the car will be unable to start and it will have to be towed to a dealer, where it will be recharged with a special machine. That would probably not be good for its longevity.

Another way to get it in this condition is if you attempt to drive the car too far after it runs out of gas. Without the ICE available to charge it up it can run itself down below the critical charge level to restart the car.

I notice that if I have the A/C on when I'm sitting in the car (2009 Gen II) with the system in "Ready", using phone, texting or whatever, the bars will quickly go down to 2 Purples (43-47.5%), but a quick drive around the block soon gets it back up to 7 Greens (64-77.5%); I don't know what they do when they service the car, but when I take it through the car-wash, the operators tell me to leave it in "N" and I notice that if the A/C is on, the SoC will go down quickly, but I've never agonised too much about it - I trust that the engineers at Toyota have designed the system to work under all manner of conditions (…damned clever, those Japanese!)

In fact I remember when I picked up my car after the service to put a new tires a year ago, the SOC of the battery was 28%! I hope they did not drain the battery too much.

Just now I did a test myself by shifting the gear to Neutral with the AC on. The car battery drained down to 30% from 60% really quickly with the AC on. I did not drain it further than that fearing it may harm the battery.

On my gen 3 with moderate ac use (compressor at 2 or 3 amps, not blasting ac which can be up to 10 or more), it takes some time to get to 40% and kick in the engine from 60%, at least 5 minutes if not closer to 10. How many miles are on your car?

As a side note, I'm not sure why they would want it in neutral to put on tires.

In general, I would imagine if the car restarts you're ok, so long as it isn't habitual. I'm no HV battery expert though.

That's about what mine has too. I guess it just shows that many of these places the people don't know anything about hybrids

Just did a simple battery draining test. Drove and charged the battery up to 67.8% SOC. Parked in front of my home. Started up the AC.

First 5 minutes I had battery current of 3.5 to 4 amps, where AC power is around 600W. For the remaining of the test (10 min) i tried to keep the current at 4.5 to 5.5, where the AC power is at 750 W to 850 W.

It took exactly 15 minutes to drain the battery from 67.8 % to 39.7 %

During my initial test i was browsing reddit. Maybe time goes fast when i am having fun lol.

The dealer is not the only option. We have many customers who have used our Prolong Battery System products to recharge their hybrid battery after an excessive discharge event. It can easily be done at home in a few hours with our systems.

Every time I take my car to Toyota for oil change I get in my car and the battery level indicator shows 2 bars. I have no idea why this is and I've asked and get back no answer.
When I go through the drive through carwash and my AC is on, car in neutral, battery needs recharging, a warning comes on the screen saying car can't charge in neutral. Prius c 2013.

Yesterday I tried draining the battery to 30% in Neutral. No warning message. Did not have guts to drain it further. Regular Prius Gen III.

without factory specs, you have no way of knowing if the battery is within them or not.

Prius seem to not take kindly to third parties taking possession, just for a few hours. Lots of threads here, regarding installers (window film, audio, etc) and valet service messing up the car. It's not possible/practical to "educate" everyone you're going to hand your car to; something for Toyota to pay some attention to?

It's like taking your toddler to daycare, and then having to stand there for half an hour, outlining the kid's special dietary needs, the toy they can't be without, their neurosis, and on and on, lol.

Just hope the valet doesn't lose your key and leave you stranded !(. They at least bought another key but led to a long afternoon:(.

I was happy the mechanics did not drain my battery to the point that battery cannot spin up the MG1 to start the engine. :)

Maybe we have members on PriusChat who drains the battery to 0 in neutral mode. It can drain to 0 in less than 20 minutes if you have the AC on. Maybe some error messages will come up on the dashboard.

This sounds almost exactly like mine. And mine has similar mileage to yours. So either we're both ok or we're both in trouble :p

If we're not moving, the car gets shut off. Gotta maintain my fuelly icon.

Not sure we are talking about same thing here but here goes. My Prius gets left in neutral with AC running when I am picking up grands or waiting for wife. To hot in Texas to not run AC. When it gets down to 2 bars ICE starts up and charges battery just like it is supposed to. Happens all the time. Don't understand what the problem is here. seriously.
