In Japan, Priuses can talk to other Priuses

    Remember in an earlier post about my experience with DRCC at 70mph, I had wished that cars further than the car in front could communicate with my car automatically so that the car knows that traffic further up is coming to a halt. Interesting to read about ITS Connect being an option in Japan.

    "These three models are equipped to handle V2I, or vehicle-to-infrastructure, communications too. Some traffic signals can send information with their current color and the number of seconds before the light will change to the next color. If it’s about to change to green, the car will tell the driver. If it’s about to change to red, the Prius will kick into an aggressive regen braking mode to recover more energy. Besides managing traffic lights, ITS Connect will also communicate with the car ahead while you’re driving to improve adaptive cruise control and let you know if an emergency vehicle is headed your way."

    I read in the news (BBC??) just today that AUDI was working on something similar on a couple of their models. It'll be commonplace by the end of the decade.

    Audi are only doing traffic light communication at the moment, not vehicle to vehicle like Toyota is in Japan.

    When I was young, the Firetrucks (and I assume Police cars) had a signal on them that would change traffic lights to green in the direction they were traveling.
    Within 6 months, some civilian cars in town always got a green, as they were spoofing the signal. One hopes that whoever is implementing this communications is doing very secure validation.
