'07 Prius - P0A80 and other DTCs... Advice please?

Hey, folks. I've got an '07 Prius that, now that it's out of warranty, has lit up lit up like Christmas and wants a new battery. Rather than pay Toyota's diag fee, I figured I'd start by buying my own mini VCI cable from Amazon. $20 got me a lot more info than I had before, and a lot more DTCs... If anyone could help me devise a repair plan I would be super grateful. Basically, I'm deciding between a whole new battery (Dorman or OEM) and just replacing the modules.... I think this *might* be a good candidate for just the modules...

    First, the Health Check.

I expected to find P0A80, and hoped for another code that would tell me which block was at fault - P3016 blames block 6. There are a lot of other codes here, though... I'm hoping they're just historical. Should I clear them and wait to see if they reoccur?

Seems to concur with the DTC - module 6 is under voltage (engine is currently running). Looks like I could just replace both modules in block 6?

I wanted to know a timeframe on those other DTCs, but no dice:

DTC Page is completely unhelpful... no timestamps for any of the codes. I'm wondering if I can trust any of the "Pending", "Current" etc. labels on the Health Check.

Oddly, there's no mention of the 12v battery, which I expected. I used the built in Diag tools in the MFD and determined that the 12v battery was yielding lower voltage than it should - in fact, after about 5 minutes of looking through techstream without the engine on the voltage got so low that the MFD/dash powered down and the clock was dimming.

So far I can tell that I need, at the very least, to replace my 12v battery and fix my battery. Do the other voltages in the HV battery modules look in range enough that I might be able to just replace both modules in block 6 and call it a day?

    Thanks,

    Mike

The basic diagnostic from the Prius computers, points to 1 bad block. That does not mean all the other blocks are in good shape. Just means it hasn't deteriorated to the point where it's pick up as a problem.

If you are planning to use this car for the next 8 years, then buy a new battery and forget about it. As rebuilding a battery, would not last long. You will probably have to repeat the process again when the other modules fail. Also proper balancing of the battery pack when you are done is essential to a (more) lasting repair.

It's probably just the way you worded it but I want to point out in case you don't know that the Dorman is not new and they did what you are considering: reading all the modules and only replacing the bad one(s); IOW, not new. AFAIK, only Toyota is selling a battery with new cells.

if you buy a new battery, when the car is no longer worth repairing, you can resell the battery on ebay.

Probably not - I imagine we'll want to trade-in in the next few years for a newer model. I've not been able to find any succinct and reliable data regarding the longevity of rebuilt packs like the Dorman... do you or anyone else have any good info on that? The choice between a Dorman at $1400 vs. OEM at ~$2200 is a tough one without knowing how they would actually compare. =-/

Good call, I hadn't thought of that.

Yup, poor wording on my part.

If you can get an OEM for $2200, just do that. That will give you at least 8 years of reliable service. And when you sell the car, it'll be worth more money because you have a trouble free new battery installed.

Dorman is a temporary option and will most likely require you to claim warranty service within the 3 years. At half the price of a new OEM battery, it's really not worth it. When it's time to sell the car, it will also be worth less money because it has a rebuilt battery instead of NEW.

If you can afford the new battery, that would be the best choice here.

Replace the bad module and recondition your existing battery (the one you already know the history of) for under $500. Then maintain the hybrid battery regularly to keep it going strong for the long term. Enjoy several more years of life from your current battery while feeling happy that you saved yourself thousands of dollars:

the dorman has a 3 year warranty on parts. someone has to put it in, and replace it if it fails. there have been some failures, but no way to put a % on it. if you diy, it's not an issue, and they are good about it. of course, your car is down for a few days. there are also some good reports about longevity.
it seems to be hit or miss, and maybe that's the nature of battery rebuilding. the cells you don't replace can become problematic at any time, even if you balance during rebuilding.
that should get you 3 years +, but idk if it's worth savings the 800 bucks.
jeff's solution above seems to be a good one for the diy'er.

We've provided more than enough evidence to demonstrate that our products work exactly as advertised and that people who use our products like our products. They work for the same reason that cycling individual modules with hobby chargers work, our application is innovative and this is why we have patents pending, but the baseline technology is widely known. It's hardly something that needs to be proven all over again by "independent tests".

We are starting to think that maybe you don't want to be convinced. Maybe you just want to follow us around and throw negativity our way. If so that's OK, we are honored you care enough to bother. We will keep on Extending the Life of Peoples Hybrids - whether you believe our products work or not . . .

Just wondering, do you have evidence otherwise?

As a prolong charger owner, I have no double-blind independent testing but I have found that the voltage readings on my repaired 06 pack (charged/discharged routines) are much more equal in value to others who have posted their readings like the OP. My modules are now .01-.02 volts of each other.

But they are not claims by me alone. They are claims by hundreds of "independent" customers who have actually used our product, unlike yourself. Are you implying that the hundreds of them are lying also?
