What is the expected lifespan of a Toyota Prius and when would the batteries need changing?

There are prius out there with over 200k and no battery replacement.
I know in New York there are prius used as taxi’s and they do just fine.

I have heard the a prius can be expected to last 300k+ if taken car of properly and by that I mean doing the regular maintenance and upkeep you would do on any normal car.

I'm less concerned with how long it will last, than how long I plan to use the Prius.

In honesty, I'm only concerned for 7-10 years. Here in the states holding a car for 10 years is pretty good, I think the average is somewhere south of 7. Since Toyota provides a 10yr / 100,000mi warranty on this battery (just not where I live), I feel confident that it will make it.

From what I've read, the wear on the pack would show up gradually, and not just roll over and die one day. When it starts to fail (in 10-20 years ;) ), I would think that it would just hold less charge and discharge faster. As long as it can start the ICE I should be fine even with a failing battery. The ICE is similar to a Yaris with modified timing (and CAM shaft?).

So... If I really need to use my Prius past 2017, I'd probably just do the CalCars conversion in 2017 and get a new pack that was PHEV capable. Otherwise, I'll sell the 2007 Prius and buy the 2017 version.

    Hi Dubsky

Well, wish I knew about the battery life as well. But, usually it's hooked up to my Winnebago as a tow, so will this help lifespan?? ;)

The entire car must be scrapped before you hit the 100,000 mile mark. If you drive past that, there's a hidden explosive charge in the battery whose detonator is connected to the hundred thousands' digit on the odometer, so that when it appears, the battery explodes, taking out not only you and your passengers, but everyone in a 100 foot radius. If you try to be crafty by screwing with the odometer, it'll revert to showing 999,999 miles, triggering said explosion immediately.

Ever wonder why you don't hear about more of these explosions in the news? Toyota's covering it up, and this forum is just full of paid shills who send flamemail and nastygrams to anyone in the press who even tries to reveal the truth. Toyota's really out to destroy America by poisoning groundwater with nickel through Prius explosions; the corresponding destruction of Europe and Japan is merely collateral damage.

The bombing of the USS Cole was done not by a boat full of explosives but by a Prius.

In California and the states that follow CA's emissions standards, the warranty on the hybrid system is 10 years/150,000 miles. In all the rest of the states, it's an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty.

I have 82,500.00 on my 2012 Prius. I have two door actuators that went and no one else here seemed to have problems...and occasionally the sign of loose traction(?) car with squiggly lines appear on my screen, sometimes when stopped. I just got a notice that when the IPM (Intell. module..is this the brian of the car?)...should fail that it is now covered for 15 yrs., no mileage restriction. If it fails it would go into fail safe mode and several lights like the one mentioned, tire pressure and others would appear at one time.
I am a little worried about how long I should keep this one and what are the general costs if I did make it to 300 miles? I had a friend at work have an older one and her battery quit under 100,000.00 miles and they replaced it. So they "can" go at that mark...and not so sure about what to think.

you have just described every vehicle on the planet.

no guarantees, but if you want to avoid breakdowns and repairs as much as possible, do like i do and trade in every 4- 5 years.

this will cost more, but there's something to be said for sleeping well at night, and the benefit of newer car.

I have never had these problems on my sienna's previously or my BMW or others...especially UNDER 100,000.00 miles. So, I feel my Sienna may not be safe to keep.
