that's interesting. not so with my pip, level 1 or 2, the last 20% or so take about 33% of the full charge time. some had logged it early on in the pip forum.

either way, there's plenty of time to fully charge a bolt overnight, even at a lower amp level 2.

The smaller battery in the PiP could make that slow down near the end more apparent than in plug ins with larger packs. Then the tapering off is done, in part, to control heat build up. Active cooling of the pack can allow the final 20% to be done quicker than with simple air cooling.

Charge tapering is to avoid over-charging and attendant risk of cell breakdown. Any intelligent charging system for any reputable lithium cell package incorporates tapering, independent of passive or active cooling.

but isn't volt racking up amazing ev miles, without much, if any, tapering?

    Bigger buffer
buffer - again - buffer. It's what makes the Prius traction pack warranty easily extend to 150,000 miles in CARB status . A nice buffer. Consider the latest iteration Tesla offering 60 kwh. It's actually a 75 kwh traction pack - that's software limited to 60kwh .... thus enlarging the buffer of the 75 kwh... Lo & behold, that gives it a bigger buffer, so lo & behold it charges to full - super fast on superchargers with literally no throttle down time due to the larger buffer. That's why many prefer the 60 kwh traction pack - since 99% of people very seldomly drive 200 miles or more in any given trip.

Or design a more intelligent charging system and cut the buffer and thus the pack cost.

so, if the pip has a large buffer, why the slooooowwwww taper?

So, the batteries are throw away, and the number needed is growing exponentially, are they planning on using " Samantha" to twink her nose and produce the rare earth necessary to continue production or is the next acquisition going to be China?

i think they are recyclable. and tech is working away from rare earths, hopefully before it runs out. maybe we'll have hydro by then.

I think he actually knows about the high recyclability. He's just trying to goad you into the fray. That's why his screen name is Lucifer - playing devil's advocate for no apparent reason. Obviously he's from the beginning of time because he remembers the Bewitched series.

What good is a 15 minute charge after 300 miles if your route doesn't take you near a charging station for 800 miles, or with a 90 mile diversion, 420 miles?

15 minutes is too long. I'd want 170 miles of range in a maximum of 8 minutes, and I'd need access to one immediately in every town in the US larger than a few thousand people.

    Part of the charging/fueling conundrum:

    Upside for BEVs:
Provided one can charge at home and has an appropriately kWh sized battery, there is no need to make commuting detours to charge; it’s home and done

    Upside for gassers:
On medium range and longer trips, planning ahead for fueling is rarely needed; gas stations are plentiful and where there are roads, there is usually a gas station not far away

    Upside for PHEVs/Range extenders:
Less need to worry about the aforementioned scenarios

For BEVs its going to be at least a few more years before charging stations are sufficiently plentiful to approach the thoughtless refueling convenience of gassers on the road.

Many here on PriusChat and other PHEV/BEV sites are not so worried about such things, but may be the exception to the general population, willing to make some charging compromises for the benefit of an all EV drive, environment, geopolitical motivations, etc.

However, witness the large swath of solo commuters in SUVs and trucks and it is evident that a great many are not willing to endure some small inconveniences or route planning when it comes to their vehicle choices.

funny - most folk that lease/own pricy cars like the S are the top money earners. Yet their valuable time must be worth less than your time - because your extra 8 or 9 minutes is too long to wait to charge - and their time isn't. Heck we should all be extremely grateful you bother to waste those precious minutes you do - to even give us such pearls of wisdome. I feel bad - your last post here must have cost you at least $10,000 - maybe we can all chip in to cover your expenses.

OK then, lets just say that Tesla is not right for you. Let's just leave it at that. What you need is a range extender or a PHEV.

No, I'm excited to hear his next post on how a BEV isn't right for him by only changing a few words and saying the same thing. Politician much?

No mystery there. They can afford to waste their time.
