    Hi all,

    I like my Prius C so much, that we are considering buying a 2017 Prius (the main one, all the model numbers confuse me haha) in a few months or so. Any advice as to the levels and models? What do you drive? Any changes to 2017? Thanks!

    As i always do, I recommend you study the customizations chapter in the owner's manual and get the customizations you want BEFORE you buy. The salesman will get them for free, after you own it, Service may try to charge you.

    They're arranged similarly to a Prius c with the addition of Touring models.

    Prius Two Eco adds to the Prius Two
    • Li-Ion battey
    • Tire Repair Kit (Deletes spare tire )
    • Delete rear wiper
    • Higher factory tire pressure specification (and different tires... Dunlops I think)
    • 3-Dr Smart Key System
    • Automatic Headlights

    All 2017 models include TSS-P

    • All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
    • Pre-Collision System w/ Pedestrian Detection
    • Lane Departure Alert w/ Steering Assist
    • Automatic High Beam

    So for Prius Two, Two Eco, Three and Four models, the price increase in base price for 2017 reflects the cost of making TSS-P standard. (+$415). Three Touring and Four Touring models only increase by $15.


    It depends on what you're looking for in your next Prius. If you're looking for the ultimate mpg car, the Prius Two Eco will fit the bill. It's a $500 upcharge over the Prius Two.

    Thanks for that great answer. I think the Eco is for me. Lithium Ion battery has what advantages?

    Also, why get rid of rear wiper?

    Lithium Ion weighs less, so does no rear wiper. (it is the motor that is heavy)

    Eco means light weight in this context.

    That's great!

    The Li-Ion battery in the Gen 4 is used to reduce weight (rather than increase power as in some other applications). The rear wiper was removed to save weight (as jimbo mentions above) and slightly improve aerodynamic. The same goes for the spare tire.

    Also, I would take your time and sit in each version that you're considering... You will at least get to know some of the exterior and interior differences which you will live with on a daily basis. Know what you can and will do without, and then go from there... Since you're coming from a "C", then I think any of the regular hatch versions will end up being a good upgrade, especially with the redesign. I personally melted right away when I laid eyes on a 3... I do feel guilt on missing out on the now-standard TSS-P, however I got to take advantage of the savings and 0%, so that'll keep me going for now...

    So, the Prius Eco is "Two". Does that mean that the "Eco" model is only available in the "Two" level? If so, what does Two not have, that the higher levels have? The information I find on toyota.com seems a bit sparse.

    Anyone can correct me if I'm mistaking. Yes, the Eco is limited to the "Two" version. It won't have the Softex steering wheel, no nav or premium audio, no wireless charging for phone, no spare tire (only repair kit). It will still come with the lithium ion battery, two tone wheel covers, LED headlights... And the missing options go up and up from there... Click on "view details" under each model type on Toyota's website and it should show you what more you're getting as you move up with each trim level: Customize Your Own Car, Truck, SUV or Hybrid

    I'm of the opinion that the Eco model is a marketing thing. I have a level four trim with all the goodies and I'm getting stupendous mileage. Much better than the EPA stats show on the Eco model. I am not the only one either. You should get the options you want. You already know how to drive a Prius. Don't worry about the Eco model unless that is what you want.

    The Eco model is based on a Two, yes, because it's designed to be the lightest model so that it can achieve higher mpg.

    Don't be ridiculous. That would only slow down the car because it would have to carry the weight of 5 extra letters.
    Most cars detune the engine or use a different engine to increase fuel economy. Prius Eco on the other hand left the engine alone and increase the fuel economy by ditching the spare and rear wiper and use ultra LRR tires and pumped up the default tire PSI. All those mods by Toyota decreases the weight the drag and the overall rolling resistance. Since it's easier to roll than all other Priuses, it accelerates faster.

    Every level but 2 has the Lithium Ion battery; it's not unique to the Eco level. I'm not sure of the advantages.

    Why indeed?


    The Eco comes at a $500 premium over the 2, and loses the spare, and the aforementioned rear wiper. If I was shopping, I'd probably go for the 2.
