I quit using iTunes for music and bought a WIN 10 phone on clearance for MP3s. Only use iTunes in an emergency for FW reflash.

Ohh, it's a free 6 month trial I think for Apple Music. I'm not sure it has to install anything (I thought it was subscription based).

I ran the iTune install, everything seems to be fine. Kinda figured.

Well, except that I discovered I apparently missed backing up quite a few albums.

But they're mostly from CDs we have, so no big problem, just need to rip again. :)

So I bought two new laptops.

Like the Latest WIN 10 update as it has several nice features. Used Cortina many times and she was very nice to me.

    WINDOWS 10 FRUSTRATION

Despite my avid dislike for Cortana, I have to say, other than picky little things I have not had any issues with Windows 10 until this weekend.

I live in an area where power goes out. Often. When it does, it may be off for a few seconds, a few days, and in rare winter storm cases, one, two, even three weeks. That leaves me without heat, or running water, but I can survive that.

Now, there is a another problem.

Since Windows 7, sometimes when power goes out and the desktop computer is on, when power is restored, it has not wanted to boot up. Usually had to turn it on, wait, decide it won't boot and then do a hard shutdown and then turn it on again and everything is fine. At times, it took a second round of that.

Power glitched on Saturday. Computer was stubborn. It would not come back on after five tries, I let it rest. On Sunday, I tried and it booted right up. I came back later -- it was in sleep mode -- and it would not come back. Had to try three times and it finally came back.

Frustrated, I wondered if going back to Aug. 23, my last recovery point, would make a difference. So, I went ahead and did that.

THEN when it had to restart itself after going back to the recovery point, Windows 10 repair came up and said there were problems rebooting and it would attempt to fix it. It whirred and wiggled for awhile and came back and said it can't fix it. Do, I want to restart or quit. Well, I quit and turned off the computer, waited an hour or two, came back turned on computer and it went into immediate REPAIR LOOP again.

I lost count of how many times it came back and said it would fix it and then say it could not and ask if I just want to ignore the repair and restart. Every time I restarted, the repair loop would reappear and attempt a fix.

Finally late Monday, I decided to try safe mode. I was able to boot right up in Safe Mode.

I then messed about a bit, debated trying to fix things some more (HAHAHAHA) and decided to shut down and come back this morning.

Well, what do you know. By going into Safe Mode, I must have "broken" the endless repair loop. I have had no trouble and I have been using the computer off and on all day.

If any of you face the endless repair loop, try the safe mode thing. Even if you don't do anything once you are running. BTW, lots of posts on computer forums about the endless loop and people having no luck trying to disable it.

Maybe one of those uninterruptible power supplies, something that gives you a 10 min buffer to shut down?

I have used a recovery disk/image and just wiped it. Try Apricorn USB back up device on sale very where. Buy an UPS at SAMS.

With this you image a good drive and then swap it out if there is problems.

Most likely it was in the middle of an update when the power went out. Also you can rebuild the unit in safe mode with the anniversary update.

Also you just go to the Apricorn site to download the current software. No need for the CD. Works every time.

Apricorn SATA Wire Notebook Hard Drive Upgrade Kit with USB 2 0 Connection | eBay

Now you know why I only use laptops these days since you need a huge UPS for a desktop.

For backup with our desktop PC's, I always have a second internal hard drive installed (a typical desktop case invariably has at least one additional internal bay available, with all the wires ready), use (Windows) Robocopy in a batch file, to periodically copy all the files I want to backup. Very handy. It'll copy (with correct switches) whatever drectory trees you spec, the /mir switch ensures they're synced, and it copies efficiently: only copies newer date files. Google it for more info.

Strange anomalie though: it refuses to copy My Music and My Pictures. Fine with me: I keep everything of import in My Documents, or other folder at C:/.

Left the PC running overnight, trying to get something downloaded. This morning yup: have the anniversary update, and some thoughtful touches:

    1. Windows Store pinned to the task bar
    2. Cortana back
    3. Gap in my desktop icons, hmm...

Turned out the last was deletion of my (classic) FreeCell shortcut. Now the gloves are off. :cautious:

    Reinstalled no problem, but yeah.

Windows Key + X seems a good way to get to a lot of system stuff quick.

I hate Windows 10 again. Absolutely.

It updates when it wants -- right when I need the computer most urgently and slows everything to a crawl.

    Cortana and her cats....GRRRR

Found a "feature" I really dislike:

In Windows 7, archiving pic's on my iPhone to the pc, I would plug in the phone with usb, open Windows Explorer, right-click the phone and choose import pictures and videos, then click more options, and ensure the option to correct orientation/rotation is ticked.

Used to work. Last night I did my first pic backup since the Win10 upgrade, did all of the above, result is a lot of pics on the computer rotated 90 degrees, 180 degrees. I read up a bit on the hows-and-whys, exif info and so on, even downloaded a utility recommended by how-to-geek, but nothing working.

Bottom line, Win 7 used to handle this well, Win 10 is a fail. There's a MS discussion on the subject, runs eight pages, and so far no solution, lotsa acrimony.

I'm really crushing on Windows 10 now especially after the anniversary update. It finally auto updated me about 2 weeks ago and I'm loving the new start menu. I click no to all updates. If it works fine, they will have to force it upon me.

Speed: I have a nearly 6 year AMD FX4100 CPU with 8 gb of ram with a 120 gb SSD. It's a pretty slow computer by most measures today, however, win10 is just flying. Even those constant updates are fairly quick. The anniversary update unstandably took a little longer.

I did have to clean install windows. The upgraded windows had an issue with my sound card driver that I couldn't fix. Clean install worked fine

I still gripe about notifications. There has to be a way to remove that bar from inserting itself into my full screen games. Cortana keeps asking me to use her to search for things. She needs to stop. I'm also disappointed that windows defender can't just do its scanning without asking me. Why can't it just scan prior to shutdown like it does for updates? Or why isn't there a setting to scan in the background while I surf?

Also, I don't know if this is new but there is a drag and drop for mp3s in iTunes now direct from explorer to your iPhone. You lose sync capability. Big whoop. My previous way was to add to the iTunes library. Then take a few minutes to find the songs where it gets sorted in the library and then sync to the phone. This new way allows me to use the phone almost like a USB drive.

    Screw with Cortana:

    Say:

    Hey, Siri

See what response you get (seriously)

    Or, ask her:

    Who's your daddy

    There's a ton of them...

I've found a work-around, specifically for importing jpeg's from an iPhone via Windows Explorer, could well work with other phones. It requires a third party software JPEG Autorotate. The steps:

    1. Plug in phone with USB. It appears the phone needs to be "awake", ie: you've just unlocked and started up the phone. This is yet another wrinkle that wasn't necessary before WIN 10, AFAIK.

    2. Start a Windows Explorer window (WinKey + E), navigate to "This PC" (love these names...).

    3. You should be seeing an icon for your phone. Right-click it and choose "Import pictures and videos".

    4. In the pop-up window, click "More options", then ensure these 3 tick boxes are unticked:

    upload_2016-10-18_11-6-54.png

(Likely most efficient to tick "Delete files from device after importing", save some hassle, but I'd be reluctant to suggest that, for the first go 'round.)

(Don't be tempted to tick "rotate pictures...", it doesn't work, AND means step 7 actions won't work. You then can still use AutoRotate, but have to do it much more hands-on, a few images at a time, with multiple steps for each.)

    5. On that same pop-up, select the location you want the images and videos to be downloaded. Click OK to dismiss the window, then Next on the previous window, to start the download.

    6. Install JPEG AutoRotate.

    7. Navigate in Windows Explorer so you're seeing the folder with jpeg's. Right-click it and choose "AutoRotate all jpegs in folder and in all subfolders". Note: there is a similar option without the "and in all subfolders". The latter does not work, regardless of there being no subfolders.

That should do it. Before step 7, you'll likely have a mishmash of misrotated images, some 90 degrees, some 180 degrees out-of-wack.

Again, this works on jpeg's, but NOT on .mov movies from an iPhone. The only work around I can suggest for now, for someone shooting movies thus: use landscape only (good policy anyway), and orient the phone with volume buttons towards the ground.

So, FireFox and I, after a long love affair are reaching the end. Lots of issues.

I hate to admit that I like Edge, except, I love to be able to highlight a word or phrase and then right click and search on Google for said word or phrase.

On the off-chance that someone here knows -- and I did spend about 20 minutes poking through Google and never found an answer -- is there a way to get the same function in Edge. All I get is ask Cortana and then a worthless Bing search.
