Hi my air bag warning light came on after replacing my mfd on a 2009 Prius. Old display was getting dim. got another one from Ebay...and it was the wrong part...sprayed the connectors on my old unit with WD-40 prior to replacing it while I waited for the right part to come in. At this time the air bag warning light came on and the old display wouldn't work at all. Checked all the fuses. All good. When the new replacement unit was installed...same thing. Air bag warning light is on and nothing on the display. Dealer wants $164 an hour just to diagnose the problem. Fee applied to service. I used to be a mechanic 40 years ago....my how things have changed! All thoughts are welcome...thanks.

A capable scanner on your 2009 should pull up SRS codes that's for the supplemental restraint system. If this is a 2009 this is a generation two car in the US and many places in Europe a 2009 could be a generation 3 I'm not sure of all the VIN number designations it's a 30 instead of a 20 I think. There's no reason you should have any of the SRS plugs undone replacing the MFD which is in the center of the console on the generation 2 in the generation 3 it's further up in the teardrop display as some call it.

Try getting the trouble codes this way, no scan tool needed:

Blink (a/k/a Flash) Codes – How to. | PriusChat

I don't remember for sure at the moment whether the gen 3 airbag ECU does blink codes, but if it doesn't, you haven't lost anything trying.

    Hi Tom,
Thanks so much for responding. First time I've used the chat to try to solve a problem. Did try my cheap Harbor Freight code reader ...with no luck...no codes stored. Only thing I can think of is that by spraying the connectors with WD 40, I shorted something out. I do not know the elecs or the Prius. I DID change out the instrument panel board 6 months ago and it has been working fine. I also do not think the ABS light has anything to do with the teardrop MFD. I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and (God forbid) take it to the dealership. I appreciate your help.
