I had my MFD go out yesterday, blank, today when i started the car it came back on.. it then went off, on and is now off.
what is going on? connection? thought it might have had something to do with radio.. I turned the radio on when MFD came on but might just be coincidence in timing. radio works but MFD is off

But you can still operate everything by the steering wheel memory buttons on the steering wheel to change the station and all of that It's just the MFD is blank going in and out generally that seems to be an electronics problem in the NFD itself so the screen is functional but the electronics that the screen and the digitizer are plugged into are getting buggy I have seen these things with rust around the screens and all the sheet metal pieces that hold all the electronics together so I guess moisture can get in the vehicle then it gets behind all that stuff and works its magic I've seen a bunch of them this way and salvage yards even with the windows rolled up.

You just need to solder a new capacitor to the MFD after you pull it out. It starts out as an intermittent problem so might go back to normal for a while. Of course turning your car off is not easy when you have this problem...

Is this thread about the MFD or combination meter?

Disregard my post #6. That link is for the combination meter, not for the MFD. My mistake.

is the capacitor part of the inside of a MFD or in a different location. Can I buy a capacitor separate for the MFD? thanks

The MFD turning on and off in my 2006...the radio is intermittent as well, but not at the same intervals as the MFD.

Is the capacitor located in the MFD, can I buy that separately and install the capacitor "fairly" easily?

Does it make more sense to buy the entire MFD?

Yes it's connected to wires that are connected to the board. You just solder a new capacitor to those wires. Do an image search on google and you'll find lots of how-to photos and videos.

Ok, thanks. Do you believe his would fix my intermittent screen issue. The controls on the steering wheel work fine but that's unless if I cant see the screen of course. Would rather buy just the capacitor. $$$$

Oh, apologies... I thought you were referring to the combination meter / Speedometer... The touch screen MFD is just something you replace with another one from a junk yard to fix.

If that's a component within the MFD touch screen then I'd say it'd make sense to try that first before replacing the whole thing...

Perhaps @ChapmanF has an opinion on if trying this would be the next logical step?

Any signs of damage on the touch screen or dead areas? Because that would point to a different problem...

no, its a clear screen...no dead spots. Where would I see options from @ChapmanF? I wouldnt want to buy the Film capacitor THEN purchase the whole whole screen as well. $$$

Yea... Least expensive would be to find someone with similar Prius and try their MFD to confirm it solves the problem and if it does you can buy one at a junk yard.

There is a solder joint that breaks on one of the internal circuit boards that will cause this issue, have to remove disassemble and have a local computer shop reflow the surface mount solder joint. There is a writeup with pictures about this on a prius gurus site which I cannot remember the name but I think a search here turned up a link.
