Check engine light on 1/2 the time and off half the time.
Usual answer is coolant fluid leaking into cylinder causing misfire until dried out. But isn’t that impossible in my case because drove it for two years and no loss of coolant fluid and leaks zero oil?

    how many miles?

have you cleaned the egr circuit?

You need to provide codes that are there half the time as a starting point.

Describe symptoms in detail. When did shaking start? How often? Have you replaced any parts yet?

I already unplugged the egr. That didn’t make a difference. I have since plugged it back in.
But before I give more details, I need to rule out the usual reason for the knock which is misfiring of one cylinder due to leaking of coolant fluid into the cylinder. So let’s make it simple first. Is it not true that coolant fluid leak into the cylinder CAN NOT be the cause for the simple reason that there had been zero coolant fluid loss after two years of hard driving?

C'mon, just the miles on it, please?

Could be it's just getting started. Again, divulging the miles on it would help.

    Just editorial:

Is your car a 2010 Prius, level "V"? If so you might want to report the intitial post (button below the post), and ask moderator to move; this is a "Prius v" forum, the larger version Prius that debuted in 2012. FWIW, the mechanics are more-or-less the same, at least for the purpose of this discussion.

Without sharing codes very few of us will share free advice. A dealer won’t require details, they will just charge you $150-$200 for a diagnosis.

I get it, you may not have a scanner and don’t want to pay a dealer to diagnose. A hybrid is not the easiest thing to diagnose.

Since I am being charitable today and responding, yes, there could be no noticeable coolant loss if it was a cylinder to cylinder leak, a bad egr valve sticking (unplugged is not enough to block flow), a very unlikely plug/coil/injector fail just at startup (those problems continue and code with large misfire counters) or the result of a normal head gasket failure that happens by the thousands in 2010-15 Prius engines.

How does a normal hg leak not show coolant loss? It seals up the very minor leak on startup. The leak only occurs when the cooling system is pressurized and the engine has cooled off, typically overnight. It could be four drops once in a while.

Someone could have put in stop leak at some point and it is wearing off.

Feel free to change the plugs, coils and injectors. Replace the egr valve and software with the newest versions. Or swap parts around watching the misfire code locations. Shotgun it. Even this is better with a capable scanner.

Now I am afraid of aggravating you. I know that many factors influence knocking. Right now it wouid give me peace of mind knowing it is not from coolant fluid leaking into the cylinders, anytime day or night.
I just want to confirm that it is an obvious truth that ZERO reservoir line at full has not changed a millimeter in 2 or 3 years of hard driving about 50,000 miles so it cannot be caused by coolant fluid leaking into the cylinders. 4 drops over night multiplied 365 days times 2 wouid show up by moving the ffluid level below the full line after 2 or 3 years 50,000 miles…True?

I forgot to mention that the knocking is not recent. It started 2 years and 50,000 miles ago with the exact same coolant fluid level
that was there 2 years and 50 thousand miles ago. And the knocking is the same it was 2 years 50,000 miles ago.
Maybe that missing information was causing it not to be obvious that it can’t be coolant leaking into cylinders. Also the oil level never changes even after 10,000 miles between oil changes.
