P1121 Coolant Control Valve - Clear codes works fine for 3 minutes???

    IMG_20240424_203231146.jpg I picked up a gem of a 2005 Prius. It was driven at 10 miles and hour for 100,00 miles. It came with a brand new Doorman replacement hybrid battery. The issue is the the triangle and P1121 TPS throttle position sensor code.

    When I use a cheap handheld reader, I clear the codes. Turn the car off. Pull the key. Wait 3 seconds. Put the key back in and she runs fine. Awesome actually. For 3 minutes. Then the light pops back on.

    So I went and picked up a replacement throttle body assembly at the bone yard and sure enough, same ordeal.

    The computer is over riding any throttle body with sensors. Kindly, suggestions?

    Love this little car. Super nice and well taken car of. Drives like new. New good years the whole bit.

    My guess is bad luck at the bone yard and you have to try again and get a refund for the defective one. Of course compared to how nice the car you got is, you're way more lucky than you are unlucky.

    But please clarify... Do you just have the error code? Or do you have the symptom of the engine revving and unable to idle normally?

    P1121 in a Prius has nothing to do with any throttle position sensor. Did you get that idea by googling for the code, or did some scan tool you were using actually say that?

    You have to be especially careful looking for the meanings of P1 codes, because the entire P1 range is "manufacturer defined" codes that can mean completely different things in one make and another, even in one model and another.

    If you have a P1 code like P1121 in a Prius and you want to know what it's about, the only really safe place to look is in a Prius repair manual:

    The next safest is to make sure you limit your search to, say, PriusChat, where there will be a lot of threads with the right information. You will also find some threads giving wrong meanings (like the OP here), but you'll usually see them corrected in a later post.

    P1121 in a Prius pertains to the coolant control valve. It's over on the left side of the engine compartment, closer to the transaxle and inverter (though it is definitely part of the engine cooling system, and nothing to do with the inverter).

    Oh, apologies... When I did this job a couple years ago I had two codes, one for the throttle postion sensor and one for three way coolant valve. Guess I got the too numbers mixed up. Replacing the 3 way coolant valve is a fairly common repair for Gen2 Prius. This is the best price for an aftermarket version of that part. Way cheaper and likely zero difference than OEM: Heater Coolant Control Valve for Toyota Prius 2004-2009 16670-21010 New | eBay

    Thank you! I'm going to recheck the error code at autozone in an hour. It's been p1121. Throttle body sensor.

    Last week she drove without the red triangle and just the check engine light. The petal was notably soft as you pressed down and the car was slow to respond. I was only able to drive short distances around the block.

    I came across all the folks changing the Coolant Control valve when they see the p1121 error code. I changed this one with one of the most popular from Amazon and had to purge the air.

    After changing the valve, I test drove a few times around the block and headed out on the main road and the red triangle came on, the throttle basically stayed open as if it was on cruise control but I had no torque and only a tiny bit of petal worked. Basically limp mode and sticking throttle.

    So I cleaned the throttle body without removing it. No go. Did nothing.

    I went to the boneyard yesterday and got one from a pretty good looking Prius 2005, same year.

    This one works for 3 minutes and the car runs wonderful. The it pops the triangle and she goes limp.

    Clear the codes with my handheld. Turn her off, pull the key. Wait 3 seconds, restart, she flys. For 3 minutes.

    UPDATE: Okay, put the old throttle body back in after recleaning and the car hates it. I opened the position sensor area an took a look inside two days ago and between that and cleaning the MAF sensor, the car now immediately goes into Red triangle when the key is in, check engine light and just revs on its own. Almost violently, where you have to turn the car off.

    Frustrating.

    Can you understand that P1121 is a manufacturer-defined code that some other manufacturer defines to mean "throttle body sensor" in some other car?

    When Toyota uses P1121 in a Prius, they define it to mean the coolant control valve. Nothing at all to do with a throttle body.

    What are you using to read the trouble codes?

    I am guessing that your scan tool is not reading all the trouble codes that your car has. You need a capable scan tool like the Autel AP200. You buy it on Amazon or eBay for about $60 and load an app on your phone or tablet. Take a look at this tread: https://priuschat.com/index.php?posts/3290690

    Edit: My guess is that you have a trouble code for the hybrid battery that you have not been able to read with the scan tool that you are using.

    Many people have the issue and it's fixed with this video


    Asking a rhetorical question as an answer with no factual input, consideration or technical answer is less than admirable and unnecessary.

    Additionally, the vehicle just had the coolant control valve replaced with a new one and the system bled.

    The obvious is at hand with a car driven 10 miles and hour for 100,000 miles in a parking lot and the throttle was slow to respond. No red triangle and P1121 throttle position sensor - as shown in the above video.

    Saying "can you understand" is not only condescending and narcissistic - it's not language or etiquette that belongs in a forum to help people.

    AFTERNOON UPDATE #2...

    Okay, put the replacement throttle body assembly in from the bone yard and was perfect for 10 minutes. I also had the battery unplugged for 10 minutes prior to restarting the car.

    I had the radiator cap off and the bleed valve open as you loose a bit of fluid and air in the system swapping the throttle body assemblies. She ran and idled up and down learning the new part and at 10 or 12 minutes, threw codes and the red triangle.

    I'm going to head up to walmart to get a better scan tool and see what the code is. Kindly, any suggestions?

    Thank you Brian. That's a fair assumption. The hybrid battery appears to work fine. The system works on the road and shows charging. It was a city owned car and trained mechanics installed it, so I'm hoping and praying it is legit. The autozone scan tool, came up with P1121. At that time it made sense and the throttle felt off and slow to respond. Not very much though.

    I'd like to get that scan tool, but I'd like to pick one up this afternoon.

    It certainly seems like the throttle body position sensor. The car spent 10-12 minutes going through the testing motions and at the end it was like... nah. Try another one. Notably the original throttle body it rejected immediately.

    A Prius mechanic happened to stop in yesterday and buy a saw from me and he said it was either the sensor on the throttle body or the at petal. (not sure where this one is).

    I'm under the assumption that I got a better throttle body from the bone yard, just not a good enough one.

    P3024 #07EB DTC definition not found

    and

    P0A80 Replace Hybrid Battery Pack.

    I'm under the impression that the Hybrid Battery pack was recently replaced. I'll have to get the numbers off it, but brand new looking Doorman replacement. I would find it hard to believe that is bad. I did see poor reviews and a number of threads on this form regarding the Doorman batteries failing in a year or two.

    This car sat for a while, possibly up to a year before I purchased it. I had to buy a new $250 little 12 volt hybrid battery. Due to the throttle issue I had only be able to drive a few hundred feet and not charge the battery. Yesterday I drove in excess of 20 miles and up to 70 miles an hour and it was clearly charging the hybrid pack.

    Is there a way to charge each cell and test?

    Suggestions? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

    As stated by ChapmanF, trouble code P1121 has nothing to do with the throttle body! Look at some of the comments for the video you linked. They say the same thing. Because of your attitude, you will get no more help from me and a lot of others on this forum. You are on your own.

    Edit: ChapmanF knows more about a Prius than 90% of the Toyota trained hybrid master mechanics in the USA. You owe him a big apology!

    I have attached two Toyota documents that specifically address P1121.

    While some of us can be caustic at times, the information you get is often accurate and certainly costs less than a diagnosis at a Toyota dealer.

    Unfortunately the throttle body or one of the associated sensors could now be questionable. Often those incidental issues can be traced to a disconnected cable or hose.

    Dorman hybrid batteries are not new, they are just a better set of used battery modules and a newly painted case.

    I don't need an apology; it's all good as long as the right information ends up in the thread where later readers can find it.

    I totally get the confusion that can be caused by codes in the manufacturer-defined range. P1121 definitely is a throttle body code, in some completely different other car. And the same code is the coolant control valve in a Prius, not the throttle body at all. This confuses people all the time, and clearly it confused 2CarPros, who then went and made a YouTube video that continues to confuse other people. If I'm a little bit ungentle in correcting that particular recurring mistake, that's why.

    One of the comments on the video said, correctly, "The video title is misleading and will cause somebody to waste their time. P1121 has nothing to do with this video/procedure, it refers to the 3 way coolant control valve not the throttle body", and it got a reply from one Beach-Photo-Video saying "P1121 in all vehicles is a throttle position sensor." The "in all vehicles" part is a dead giveaway that Beach-Photo-Video does not understand there are both SAE-standard codes (like those in the P0 range) and manufacturer-defined codes (like all the P1s). Sometimes people even after being corrected will double down on their misconceptions.

    I actually agree ... which is why in post #3 I supplied both the graphic showing you which code ranges are SAE standard and which are manufacturer-defined (so you would have that factual input, and not have to take my word for it), and also the link to the Toyota repair manual info, where you find the exact technical answer for what the P1121 is telling you.

    The P1121 code and the pedal issue has been resolved by swapping the throttle body and the coolant control valve.

    Respectfully, there's a difference between attitude and being respectful. I was a Program Manager for Daimler Chrysler, R&D team leader and I've built and sold businesses with excellence and courtesy.

    It's irrelevant who want's to argue about the code issue.

    That's absurd. The man said "can you understand" like I'm retarded. I tested out of engineering in 2 years. As a man standing in my presence, no one would ever talk to me that way. Period. And furthermore it was not the coolant control valve.

    Telling a man to apologize to someone who gave incorrect advice and then talked down to me is silly. Defending that logic and chastising certainly not what I learned in Total Quality Management.

    I swapped the throttle body as show in this P1121 Prius Throttle body video and it worked.


    Car runs great for 3 minutes.

    Respectfully, this is my father's Prius and the codes now are

    P3024 #07EB DTC definition not found

    and

    P0A80 Replace Hybrid Battery Pack.

    Kindly as a man with a hot billionaire girl three miles away in my Bumble... I'd like to fix the car and get on this girls boat. I have to hook up solar and sail away.

    Is there a shortcut to this battery ordeal? It looks like Cell 14?

    Lastly I'm here for advice, not a hard time or insults. I can call my former Miss Teen USA wife for that.

    Swapping the throttle body worked because you probably broke it when you opened the position sensor area and took a look inside. This component is non-serviceable and can not be adjusted in the field. It is set at the factory. So if this component does fail, then the only recourse is to replace the entire throttle body.

    I don't really want to be drawn into the P1121 discussion, but from the point of view that misunderstanding the code's meaning has caused you to be drawn down a rabbit hole because you received an incorrect cookie-cutter text of what that code means. Would it make any difference to you if you were to learn that the correct cookie-cutter text straight from the Toyota Prius Repair Manual says this:

    I have read your credentials and respect that, but I think that something is stopping you from just pausing and seeing just what information we are trying to convey.
    I can assure you the man does not think you are a retard and nor do we. It was simply you repeated your statement that the code meant something incorrect after you were given the correct definition of what the code meant. Nothing more.

    P3024 - means "Battery Block 14 Becomes Weak" and together with the P0A80 does mean that you have a hybrid vehicle (HV) battery issue. As pointed out in a previous post, a Dorman battery is not new but just a rework to remove poorly performing modules, replacing with less poorly performing modules, and maybe some charging and discharging to improve the capacity. They certainly can fail in a short time depending on a lot of factors.

    The auto parts store code reader and whatever walmart sells won't work. They aren't programmed for Toyota hybrid specific codes...

    You need to either spend $40 on Mini VCI plug that comes with cracked Toyota Techstream software to install on an old Windows laptop or buy one of these OBD2 code readers so you can use Car Scanner (Elm) app and Dr. Prius App on your phone: Panlong OBD2 Scanner Bluetooth OBDII Diagnostic Tool Car Code Reader Turn Off... | eBay

    That second one is especially valuable to have in your glove box and may mean the difference between quickly getting to your destination after a 30 second delay or never getting there on time because you had to wait for a tow truck.
