Can a frayed serpentine belt cause a clunking/grinding noise? The clunking grinding noise has been going on for about 2 months and it goes on and off, Last night it started squealing and I checked the drive belt and it is frayed on the outer edge. I have a 2005 Prius with 86,000 miles. All of these issues started about 2 months ago, the day after an oil change.
    Please Help

Need more info: does it happen only when the ICE is running? Is it related to speed, or does it happen at a stop? You can take off the belt and run the engine for a very short test to see if that is the problem. Try to localize the source as best as possible. Search for "inspection mode" here to see how to keep the engine running, and look under the hood.

It happens whenever the gas engine kicks on at any speed it is always grinding at the same rate of speed, having the AC on or off does not affect the noise, it sounds like a churning metal sound coming from around where the belt is.
