    Hey all,

    I just brought a 2005 Prius yesterday, second hand with 125000 miles on it. There appears to be several problems on it and I would appreciate if this community can lend me a hand in solving the problems.

    Problems:

    -Master Warning Light is ON
    -The brakes and rotors need to be replaced due to high miles and use
    -One of the suspension is damaged (driver side)
    -Check engine light is on (P1150) by Autozone

    Other Problem: ABS and Brake System Warning Lights are Yellow

    Since I'm use to driving and parking on the flat streets on NYC, I wasn't aware that the guy's Prius (parked in a driveway tilted at like roughly 35 degrees) had the parking brakes on. Long story short, I drove around down half a block and around the corner before we noticed it was on (I know, I know. Very amateur). Afterwards, I noticed the ABS and brake warning lights were on in yellow. Not sure if it was on before or came on after what I did.

    I tried what Paul R. Hiller recommended in post #7 of this thread:

    How do you reset ABS light & yellow ((!)) ? | PriusChat

    Only the ABS light went off but after driving like 3 feet without stepping on the brakes, it came back on again.

    Additional Info:

    -I believe this specific car doesn't have VSC

    Please Help! Thanks.

    Update: Changed thread name and original post to focus on all the problems rather than just the ABS and brake lights.

    I think the problems you have on the car were there before you drove off with the parking brake on. Did you test drive?

    I was fully aware of the suspension problem and necessary tune up before buying the car. The test drive was when I drove the car with the parking brakes on. It seemed to drive fine, and still does with the occasional scratching coming from the suspension.

    So you bought the car with the master warning light on? The previous owner told you it needed a tune up and suspension work?

    Now that I think about it, I might just have done that... I didn't notice the Master Warning Light, ABS, brake light on when I paid for it. I only noticed it after driving off for like 10 minutes (I had to drive back to my college town so I was in a hurry).

    The previous owner did tell me it needed a tune up and suspension work (bad bushing).

    It sounds like the previous owner reset the car by unplugging the 12v battery for a few seconds (you can do this too). All the warning lights will go off until the car detects them again (in about the 10 minutes you mentioned). So basically you most likely bought the car with the problems.

    You can get the codes read on the car and post all the codes here. We will try to determine what's wrong with your car. If you have a tight budget, I don't know if this is going to end well.

    The local Toyota dealer quoted me 1 labor hour, "about $100" as the charge for checking the codes (not even sure if its all of them). Would it be worth it?

    I was planning on flushing the radiator and replacing the coolant to solve the check engine light. After reading several forums, most of them predicted that engine code P1150 would lead to code P1121 so I brought a new pump (part # 16670-21010). Going to do tomorrow. Maybe oil too...

    Should I wait for the dealer to give me the code before replacing the rotors and brakes?

    I don't think p1150 and p1121 are related. So don't fix a part that's not broken, you can cause more problems that way.

    I would pay the dealer the $100 and get all the codes and whatever else is wrong with the car. They may even check your brakes for free and give you advice on whether or not the brakes and rotors need to be replaced.

    Will bring the car in tomorrow for a check up and come back with updates.

    Thanks.

    Or buy Mini VCI so you can be self-sufficient regarding retrieval of the diagnostic trouble codes.

    DTC P1150 means the coolant heat recovery system path is clogged. This might be related to the engine coolant valve being stuck if P1121 was also logged. This could be caused if there is air in the engine coolant loop. I have posted on how to replace the engine coolant, this is not easy because of the coolant heat recovery system and the need to purge air out by running the pump for the CHRS system.

    16670-21010 is the engine coolant valve, not a pump.

    I borrowed a OBD2/EOBD+ABS readers today. Ran the scan and got the following codes:

    OBD2/EOBD Control Module:

    $7E8: P1150
    $7EB: P0A80, P0A9C

    ABS:

    C0200
    C1235
    C1259
    C1310

    Please help! Thanks

    At the very minimum, you need a new hv battery, code p0a80

    <P0A80> means that the traction battery has a problem, and P0A9C means that one of the traction battery temperature sensors has failed. That is another reason the traction battery would need replacement.

    In addition, C0200 and C1235 both mean the right front wheel speed sensor has a problem. C1259 and C1310 are logged by the skid control ECU and those indicate that ECU realizes the hybrid drivetrain has a problem (the failed traction battery.)

    @JC91006 @Patrick Wong

    So in short, replacing the HV battery should clear codes P0A80, P0A9C, C1259, and C1310? If so, after replacing it, would I have to do anything to reset the code?

    Thanks for the responses

    The skid control ECU DTC may not clear automatically. There are posts about how to clear that using a jumper on the OBD-II connector. Or use Mini VCI.

    If yer lucky in your state a car can't be sold that can't be inspected, if so... take it back to the original owner that is fleecing you.

    also the car might be just out of CARB warranty at 10-yr from orig purchase but you can ask Toyota for assist on the HV batt replacement...unlikely to be under 10-yrs but check purchase date

    (when I say ask Toyota usually you have call HQ yourself and make a case the dealer will normally quote the full cost of batt replacement ~$3500 min.....check back with us for instructions if you want to go this route)

    @Lucifer

    I would love to attempt that, but being as it's my first car, have college-size wallet, and other factors, it would be in my interest to keep it.

    @wjtracy

    Worth a shot. How would I proceed with this?

    Thanks for the reply!

    Unfortunately Toyota said no :(. Gotta get myself a new battery now.

    @Patrick Wong

    I got the radiator flushed yesterday at an auto shop. The check engine light is still on but the guys there said it's only on because of the problems and that P1150 is gone. Ran my own scan too, it is gone.

    I drove home today from college, it was a 5 hour drive. Towards the end of the drive, a red box came on in the head unit wit a thermometer and it said problem. A few seconds later it went away. I ran my scanner and I got code P1121.

    Any suggestions? I still have the valve from Toyota.

    Thanks for the help everyone!
