I have a 2010 Prius with the navigation system, and looked at a 2012 Prius with the newer navigation system, and I have a couple of questions that 2012 owners might be able to answer:

    1. Is there a "route trace" on the 2012 nav? Route trace is like a digital "cookie crumb" that shows where you've been, it's on the 2010 nav and very helpful to me.

    2. Is there a way to change the colors on the 2012 nav? The 2010 nav has white background with dark lettering, which looks clear and high contrast to me, but the 2012 nav on the 2012 prius I drove has a gray background with dark lettering which was hard to read due to lower contrast.

    3. The 2012 nav screen looks smaller than the 2010 nav screen...

Just note that there are two types of navigation systems on the 2012 model. Based on what you've described, you were looking at the 6.1" Display Audio system w/ navigation.

The one you're used to on the 2010 is the Premium 7" navigation system (now upgraded to HDD instead of DVD) and that's a Denso unit, similar to yours. The Display Audio version is a lower end one (I believe it's flash-based) and have "Garmin-like" graphics (colour & font) imo.

Make sure you request a 4 with the solar moonroof package, as the standard 4 has the lower end Display Audio system.

Wow the options are getting too complicated haha. I test drove a 4 and the NAV had the route trace and the better contrast graphics, and was definitely a different and better NAV than in the 2 I originally test drove. But I didn't remember whether the 4 I drove had the solar package...now I have to go back and test drive the 4 without the solar and with the solar to confirm which has the better NAV. I would have been really annoyed if I bought a 4 without solar assuming the NAV was the same as the 4 I test drove. IMHO they should have just put the better NAV in all 4s, not just the 4 with solar roof. Great forum answers, thanks!
