Eagle-eyed PriusChatter seattlebound noticed last night while visiting Toyota's mobile site that a Prius iPhone app is now listed as coming soon. What we do know is that the app should be available in August. What we don't know is what the iPhone app will do or be about.
Check out the Toyota page for yourself from your mobile phone:
    http://m.toyota.com/prius/media.html
Maybe we'll have to host another live chat with Doug Coleman, Toyota's Prius product manager, to get the details on it before it goes live.
This news begs the question: What would you want in a Prius iPhone app?

Hey there, Seattlebound. Welcome to Priuschat! :welcome:

Can you please provide a link to where you found the info about the app? I'm curious.

Tony, Thanks so much for the Warm Welcome. I can't insert links to other sites until I've posted several times but if you want to piece it together, it's:

    http :// m . toyota . com / prius / media . html

    Just take out the spaces.

can't find anymore info than you have posted. Would be really nice if it could connect via bluetooth and transfer the cars information to the phone. Diagnostic info too? Maybe doubtful on that part but the possibilities are there for some cool stuff. Whether they do it or not I guess we'll see in august. BTW, I don't even own a prius with bluetooth so if they go that rout I won't find any use, but we'll see.

You need to be on a mobile device in order to get to it, won't work form a desktop or laptop machine. it's still active.

I prodded Erica for more information, but she was tight lipped.
Posted this to the front page since I think it could potentially be a pretty cool app.

WOW! I had no idea this would get so big so fast! Now I'm really excited. Not bad for a first post. Once again, Thank you guys all so much. Everyone here is so supportive and informative.

As for the Question: Would would someone want in an iPhone App? The few things I'd like to see are:

"Find my Car" (ie. in a large parking lot or if it's stolen)

    Lock/Unlock Doors

    Sync MPG information

    Maybe Remote Start if enabled

Looks like we'll see what happens. I'm just bummed I'll have the App before the car since I'm waiting for Safety Connect.

As for "Find my Car" I have taken pictures of my car and the surroundings facing the direction I would be returning. I do this so that all I have to do is line up the picture with the environment. As for "if it's stolen" that would require a locator or some communication device. Better off just getting LoJack.

Forget iPhone! make a BlackBerry app as well. :) There are more BlackBerrys out there than iPhones. ;)

I have an iPod Touch though.

Bah I knew I should've bought an iPhone instead as a replacement last year. Oh well.

Toyota, use the camera to enable the app to take a picture of your mfd and read in the mpg to a database on the phone.

This would work much like apple's software that you use to teach your computer to recognize and tag photos of people. instead of people the app would be recognizing numbers.

of course this would then be easily uploaded to a master database on priuschat

I wonder if the iPhone app is really a website that is iPhone ready?

This site www . mobilemarketer . com / cms / news / database-crm / 3636 . html (cannot post actual URL) has an article titled 'Toyota targets iPhone users with new Prius promotion.'

Quote of the first 2 paragraphs:

"With more than 60 percent of Toyota Motor’s WAP traffic coming from the iPhone, the automaker decided to take a different approach to mobile with the promotion of the newest Prius car model.

To better cater to these loyal iPhone users, Toyota launched a mobile site optimized specifically for touchscreen devices such as the iPhone. IPhone users can access the Toyota site at m . toyota . com and click on the Prius icon to get rerouted to the iPhone optimized site."

I would ABSOLUTELY love a BlackBerry app that allowed me to enter MPG data, etc. and sync it up w/ a Toyota sponsored site (or maybe a PriusChat function)!

I'm presently using a Google Doc spreadsheet to track mine, but I'm unable to edit it mobile so I end up emailing the pertinent info (ODO, gallons, price, place of purchase, total cost, display mpg, dte, etc) to myself for later entry - WHEN I REMEMBER :(

Man, how about the Pocket PC Phone users like me? I can't even get to the site with my phone with both opera and the internet explorer in my Pocket PC. Don't forget there are a lot more POCKET PC and Blackberry users. I don't want to pay $89.99 a month for AT&T to get that IPHONE!!!!!!!!!!! We have the rights to use the same function too

Sounds like it'll be a commercial. Helpful links so you too can be a Prius owner. Kind of a waste. An app that does useful things like lock/unlock doors, work remote A/C (if equipped) download MPG information, etc. would sell more cars than a commercial.
