SORRY, I MEANT 4K ONER MSRP

I've been looking to buy a prius and trade in my 13mpg 08 Tundra and i spoke to a few dealers that said the 2010 will for sure be sold way over msrp. they said best deal is to lease a 2009 and in 3yrs the the hype will be over and can get a better deal.

My dilema is I really like the look of the 2010, but I don't want to pay $4k over MSRP, if that's true, then I'd rather get a 2009.
But if they sell the 2010 at MSRP or a little over I'd gladly wait.

Does anyone know if there's any truth to the 2010 selling way over MSRP, I'm ready to buy now, but will be bummed out if a few months later I could have gotten the 2010 for a few thousand more than the 2009.

Sorry but in this economy, with Gas prices really low.... I just don't see them selling shit for over MSRP.

If you want to take a trip to Northern Virginia, my dealership is taking orders for 2010 Prius and giving customers that place orders now a $500.00 discount off the MSRP.

It feels way too early to know how over MSRP dealers will go.

Seems, though, that your best bet may be to wait-list one now and then, when pricing is revealed, make your decision to go ahead or not. You'll then be empowered to say "yes" or "no" when you have the information in-hand and can, presumably, comparison shop.

Each dealer will make its own decision as to selling price. Have you tried one of the large Toyota dealers, such as Longo in El Monte? Usually their business practice is to sell the newest models at MSRP, not above. (Of course, the flip side is that you will get relatively little for your trade-in, so you may want to try selling it yourself if you can.)

It's really wierd that one dealers offering $500 off MSRP and another says they will sell it around $4k over MSRP.

Also, does anyone know roughly within a few thousand what the MSRP will be for the fully loaded model. It's around $28k for the 2009, if a 2010 is close, I'd really rather wait for the 2010

My guess is that the fully-loaded Platinum model will be priced at $33K +/- $2K.

Don't believe anything you ever hear from a dealer, unless you get it in writing on a contract. Even then I would only "sort of" believe anything they tell me. Even if you are lucky enough to get a dealer that doesn't lie outright, they are still likely to be confused or mis-informed.

$4K over list! That's crazy. Last I checked Toyota lost money last year and that was with just 1 solid quarter in the recession. It'll be even worse 3 quarters into it. By the second month the 2010 comes out, they'll be begging us to buy them.

I hope so, I'm killing myself with 13mpg in my Tundra and 30k miles in the first year.
I'm on the fence to buy now at a little under invoice or wait and hopefully they'll sell the 2010 at MSRP. and hopefully it's priced similar to the 2009

Sounds more like a dealer who has 2009's to move off his inventory. Shop around, there will be dealers selling under MSRP. Look around on the websites for Toyota dealers in your region. That's how I found my 2006 for less than list a few years ago. I had a light green Prius ordered for full retail and then found a dealer with a sage tan car on the lot. When he heard I had one ordered elsewhere, he asked me if sage tan was my favorite color for $500 off the price. Deal! Good luck!

Sounds an awful lot like his goal is to get you to lease a 2009. Sneaky and suspicious. I'd stay away from him now and in the future.

its not weird at all, they are trying to survive next few months, they need to sell cars that they have right now...

+1 on moving inventory. Scare you away from the future model into buying today. It's too bad we have such short sighted folks in sales.

Until we even know pricing for certain, it's difficult to say what end result pricing will be. If a dealer has a list of 20 people and 5 cars a month, he may have some wiggle room to bump MSRP+, but at the sales goals of 180,000 world wide, I think there will be adequate supply to keep dealers from demanding a premium. If one decides they can, there's probably 1-2 others within a 50 mile radius that would be worth the drive to.

I think it is understood that the 2010 will be desirable as it's the newer model, but they still have to compete with other vehicles and in this market that may be difficult at or above MSRP. In any case it sounds like you like the 2010 better so I would wait until the pricing is released.

Toyota's public and private announcements have made it very clear they want to build and sell a lot of Prius. The economy and car sales are in the toilet and gas prices are low (though they may bump up a little in the summer). There is going to be plenty of supply as long as you are willing to wait a couple of months for inventory to get built up and shipped over.

And the 2009's won't get any more costly with the release of the 2010.

I too sell them and it's too early to tell anything about pricing. We don't even know what the MSRP's will be.

I would never trust a dealership; not because I am not a trusting person, but because I have been lied to by almost every dealership I bought a car from- (over 30 new cars). These people (generally) have no ethics at all. They will say anything to make a sale. They all see themselves as "Players".
I also believe that someone will be selling 2010 models for $4K over MSRP, these people are Generally scum. The difference is as the consumer you have the ability to express your opinion with your money. Tell them to sell their car to some idiot and go to a dealership that deals fairly with customers-look, there are some.
When I bought my 2005 package 6 in November 2004 they told me $2K over and 3 month wait, take whatever package, color comes in, etc....
I went to another dealership and bought my car for $500 back of MSRP, in the color I wanted, package I wanted and it took 4 weeks to get.
Good luck; be an informed consumer not a impulsive buyer.
